Scholarship Committee ReportJune 2,2000Earlier I reported that all scholarships for the year 1999 had been paid. I wish to amend that statement I received a request from one of last year’s applicants requesting payment of her scholarship for $400.00. I am requesting payment for this scholarship. That the young lady received a letter is a fact. The fact that she received the letter is the result of an error in sending out letters to recipients and applicants. The payment of the scholarship to this young lady, Mary Alexis Craig, will bring the total paid out for the year 1999 to $3,800 dollars.Thank you,^dnaE. States
All respondents indicated their preference to keep the scholarship for African American
students.
Most sorors felt that financial need should continue to be the number one criteria of the
applicant.
Of the fourteen sorors who responded to the final question that financial need should be
defined, indicated their preference for the need to be documented by the applicant.
Nine comments were noted on the surveys. Examples of comments are: The student’s
grade point average should be the only criteria, and one soror suggested that a portion of
the scholarship be awarded on academic achievement and a portion should be based upon
financial need.
We thank all of the sorors who responded.
At this point the only change in criteria has been to change the G.P. A. from 2.5 to 3.0, on
a 4.0 scale.
We also modified the application to more closely follow the Smart Grad format which
appeared to the committee to be the format used by the applicants whose applications
were selected for awards.
We plan to submit a brief article to the Ivy Leaf highlighting the eight recipients for this
year.
We will present documentation to the tamiouchos today for checks to send to three of the
recipients. All documentation from the recipients is due by October 16.
The next meeting of the Scholarship Committee is scheduled for October 14,2000,2:00
p.m. at the home of the chairperson, Edna States.
The date for the 2001 Scholarship Reception has been set as May 19th, 2001.
There may be portions of this report that need the vote of the sorority, therefore I move
that this report be accepted.
