It is where you stand in the ^^SJlQleLlobby looking into a men's shop and you see a suit of authentic armor priced at $3800. It is where you have your picture taken while you are chatting with Jesse Owens and a woman comes up and asks, "Are you BiU Corum??╟Ñ It is where you sit in 95 de- grees heat by the pool and suddenly spot a rosy4ummied Bill Schroeder sprawled out on a Turkish towel getting French fried by the hot desert sun. It is where you go to Mass on Sunday morning and the priest opens his sermon by announcing, "Yes, we take ca- sino chips.'1 Then he adds, "We also take personal cheeks.?╟Ñ Then he adds, "We call this a shrine because we don't want you to confuse us with the many chapels in the area.?╟Ñ However, this past weekend, Las Vegas was mainly the City of Hope Sportsmen?╟╓s Club Again, as expected, the affair was a s m a s h. Irv Teiry, Dave Marmel, Irving Cel di n and other Sportsmen's Club workers had to raffle off a Cadillac and a Thunderbird to do it, and a great many organizations such as TWA, Air West and the Sands contributed freely to help them, ( But, with Art Linkletter, | Manny Harmon, Rudy LaRus- so, Chuck Benedict, Schroe- der, and numerous theatrical, television and movie personali- ties combining with their ef- forts, the show again was a fine inspirational affair. Rocky Marciano, honored; for boxing, came from New; York weighing 20 pounds less than ever before. "Jogging,?╟Ñ explained Rocky. "I jog every day.?╟Ñ Rocky, who quit boxing after 49 straight wins, was asked before the show started whether he thought Jerry Quarry should quit fighting like Rocky didi early in his career. "He won't,?╟Ñ replied the former, heavyweight king. When told that Jerry's dad wants him to quit, Rocky re- plied, "Fathers do have an in-j terest like that,?╟Ñ Pinned down j to be more specific in his ad-! vice to Quarry, whom Marci- ano saw first - hand get pounded by Joe Frazier last week, M a r c i a n o ventured, "Well, the father has some points,?╟Ñ Marciano said he retired be- : cause "I started to get disen-1 chanted with fighting. I didn't! like it as much as when I started.?╟Ñ One of the opponents who had something to do with this disenchantment, M a re i- ano suggested, was Jersey Joe Walcott "I really had to come from behind to stop him.?╟Ñ
