Nutt, P re s ., L.V.L.&.W. Go., Los Angeles, Cal Dear S ir: I am w r itin g you at th is time in referen ce to o lin e from r e s e v o ir to the town. I t seems to me almost a tiv e that we r e la y th is pipe lin e as e a rly as p o ssib le f o r ' ^ ^ s fo llo w in g reasons. The old lin e has at present been leakin g in so many places that more than on e-h alf o f the water is leaking out and is surrounding the shops and m aterial yards and as Mr. Hoffman and I went over the .matter yeaterday, we fin d that i t is doing q u ite a h it o f damage. Por instance, the turntable at the shops through the p e rc o la tio n o f th is o v e r flo w ’ o f water, is standing in water up to the c ir c le r a i l and thjfy have to be pumping at i t continu a lly . The la rg e storage ojll tank is e n t ir e ly under water to the depth o f one fo o t and i t w i l l only be a short time u n til the water and chemicals in th is s o il w ill rust through the tank even though the same sfiouM be coated w ith P.& 33, paint or any other m a teria l. I make th is a ssertio n from the fa c t that I have tr ie d to prevent ru stin g o f pipe e tc ., out here and w ithout any degree o f success. A ll through the yard around the shops and south of the Roundhouse, the water is coming to the surface so that i t is at a l l times muddy. The tressl-e work la id up to the top o f the storage o i l tank has been thrown out o f shape and I b e lie v e , as Mr. Hoffman said, wa® only a short 'tim e ago repaired but on account o f th is water tha.t is there they cannot have s u ffic ie n t foundation to hold i t properly . At the south end o f the yards the water is standing in a lake 100 fe e t by 500 fe e t long and undoubtedly when hot weather comes th is w ill be a pool rather in ju riou s to the h ealth o f employees. A day or so ago the water se rv ic e department started to d ig a d itch from the pipe lin e in the rear o f the shoos c lea r across the country to the creek to carry o f f th is the trou ble and as yet th is d itch is not completed. Knowing that the reb u ild in g o f th is pipe lin e has been included in our budget, I b e lie v e that as above stated, we should not d elay in the m atter but should have i t reconstructed at once. some extent but w i l l not elim in ate A.gent
