TOLEDO SPORTS I Main St. OX 1-2403 'Holiday On Ice' Skaters Captivate Spectators By BEVERLY CARVER Even if you haven't seen an ice show since Sonja Henie waltzed her way across America, go over to the Sports Arena and see Holiday on Ice. Ice. shows , have 'changed they're more so, and Holiday on Ice uses imagination and modern designing capabilities to mount a lavish, entertaining extravaganza. No one number is so long that the audience tires of it; no two scenes are the same. The theme is nostalgia, and it takes you back to that fantasy land where all the inhabitants are beautiful, talented, and enjoy what they're going. Costumes Resplendent From the opening numbers where the "Glamour-leers'' float across the ice in feather-fringec gowns, to the closing Hollywood number, the costumes are more and more resplendent, and the girls exhibit a faultless precision in them. From the use of fluorescent material to the latest in sparkling stretch tights, no cost is spared. In the "Crystal Palace Gai- ties" lead chorus skater Lucille Carpenter sets the tone as she undulates across the ice. The opening night audience Tuesday loved the Cook family skaters. Eight-year-old Melanie and her twin brothers Kris and Kelly stole the act. Humor For Everyone There was humor too, witty enough for adults, slapstick enough for the children, as Con nie and Glyde, Paul Andre, and Johnny Leech cavorted through the roles. All the headliners were great: Ronnie Robertson, properly dashing as Fred Astaire, and the Prince of La Mancha; petite Anna Galmarini, as cat-girl anc clown; Alice Quessy, as the "] Don't Care Girl," and Marei Langenbein, Juanita Percelly Grete Borgen, Tommy Allen and many more. Jorge and Helga Valle are a perfectly matched pair and showed it in the exotically costumed "Jungalero" scene. Designers Were Real Stars My special respect goes to the hind end of the dog in "Pooch Parade"; the Chummy Chimps, that even a non-chimpanzee lover could appreciate and the seven Jean Harlows who managed to slink, in tight gold lame sheaths, on skates. But the real stars of the show are the costume and set designers, and the imaginative production people who planned the show and used the special effects, developed the' theme, evoked the wonder and nostalgia. Holiday On Ice will be at the Sports Arena through Wednesday, Nov. 6.
