II. CALL TO ORDER: SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called Senate Meeting 28-34 to order at 6:07 p.m. ROLL CALL: PRESENT ABSENT Katie Auer Christian Augustin Josephine Binetti Amy Canepa Leia Cartwright (arrived at 6:09)* Joe Cordone Stephanie Davy David Fisk John P. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH stated that there are no minutes to be approved and we will have two sets next week. ANNOUNCEMENTS: SENATOR CARTWRIGHT enters at 6:09. PRESIDENT PRICE stated that he put a memo in the Senate boxes regarding New Business Item D from last weeks meeting. The signs for the Women's Center are not reusable and there was some miscommunication. The Senate can choose not to go forward with them if they would like and he asked that everyone let him know in their Good of the Senate. They are purchasing the signs for the Women's Center and they will use them every year. There were several questions for PRESIDENT PRICE. SENATOR TRUJILLO enters at 6:11. He apologized for being late. V. BOARD AND COMMITTEE REPORTS: A. Senate Committee Reports: B. Faculty Senate/University Committee Reports: 1. SENATOR FISK stated that the Dean search for Education met today. C. Director Reports: 1. NEVADA STUDENT AFFAIRS DIRECTOR DALEY stated that the voter motor shuttle today was a failure but it is still early in the season. Meet the Regent candidates is Wednesday in the amphitheater. He thanked the Senate for their input on questions. KUNV met Friday and they finished the operating policy. The Berkley and Chairez debate is on the 28th at 11:30 a.m. There is an Ann Richards event on the 23rd and we are helping to promote it. 2. ELECTIONS BOARD DIRECTOR RAMIREZ stated that she is glad elections are over. She thanked Angela, Gloria, Sunny, the Executive Board, and her Elections Board and her Assistant Director. She announced that the first runner up should have been Michael Perotti and not Marty Weinberg. (She passed around the official results.) She congratulated the Homecoming court and the King and the Queen. She is only taking serious applications for her Board. 3. ORGANIZATIONS BOARD DIRECTOR AYALA was not present. 4. ENTERTAINMENT & PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR JOHNS stated that October 27th in conjunction with the Student Physical Therapy Association they are sponsoring a food drive and 103.5 Kiss FM will be there. A special screening of the movie Velvet Goldmine will be October 28th at 7:30 in the MSU Ballroom. The 29th is Swing Night in the Ballroom from 8-12 p.m. Noonscenes 2 SENATE MINUTES 28-34/ October 19, 1998 have been going well and they have been moved to the courtyard. Scream 2 is the movie that will be showing. They are also working on having a Thanksgiving concert over the break. SENATOR GARCIA stated that DIRECTOR JOHNS is doing a great job. SENATOR KAWAZOE entered at 6:18. 5. OFFICE OF STUDENT INFORMATION DIRECTOR DE LA FONTAINE was not present. PRESIDENT PRICE stated that she thanked everyone for their help with the blood drive although they did not beat UNR. She especially thanked Beta Theta Gamma for their hard work. They will draw names this week for prizes. Publicity for all events is going well. He also stated that she apologizes for her absence. 6. STUDENT SERVICES DIRECTOR FLEISHMAN was not present. PRESIDENT PRICE stated that she gets off work at 6:00 and will be here as soon as she can. D. Residence Hall Liaison Report: Trung Fung stated that they had 32 students play light stick capture the flag and it was very successful. The Italian Feast was also well attended. SENATOR SHAPIRO returns at 6:21. E. Student Athlete Advisory Board Liaison Report: The liaison thanked everyone who stayed for the entire football game. They are working on if an athlete is charged for a felony they will still get to keep their scholarship until convicted. They are also starting to work on National Student Athlete Day. F. Ethnic Student Council Liaison Report: Ann Yu stated that they are accepting applications for organizations. Today they approved 10 and hopefully they will get more in. They are also considering changing their name from Ethnic to Cultural. G. Business Manager Report: BUSINESS MANAGER JIM MOORE stated that their expenditures totaled up to $4,480 last week. He read the expenditures for the last week: $350.00 for the noonscene DJ on October 21st, $375.00 for the noonscene DJ on September 30, $300.00 for the DJ for the elections on October 7, 8, and 15, $350.00 for the DJ on October 14, $190.00 for some lost tables and chairs, $29.83 to motor pool for vehicle rental, $22.25 for Ice-T posters, 3 SENATE MINUTES 28-34/ October 19, 1998 $22.00 for fliers for the October 14th noonscene, $195.54 for the September phone bill, $241.00 for a rock the vote magnetic sign, $157.50 for flowers for the Homecoming Court, $351.35 for tables and chairs for the Homecoming tailgate, $228.00 for name plates for the new Senators, $487.50 for the meal for the Senate banquet, $335.40 for the Homecoming tailgate pizzas, $185.25 for a rock the vote banner, $109.68 for the Elections Board dinner, $348.55 for misc. office supplies, and $130.00 for pre-sharpened pencils. VI. UNFINISHED BUSINESS VII. NEW BUSINESS A. Action Item: Discussion/Approval of Senator Josephine Binetti to serve on the Elections Board; Motion to approve made by SENATOR PECK, seconded by SENATOR TRUJILLO. Move into a vote. Motion passes 19-0-1. (SENATOR BINETTI abstained.) B. Action Item: Discussion/Approval of Adrienne Rodney and Aaron Clemens as members of the NSA Board; Motion to approve made by SENATOR AUGUSTIN, seconded by SENATOR CARTWRIGHT. Move into a vote. Motion passes 20-0-0. VIII. PUBLIC COMMENT IX. EXECUTIVE BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SUMMATIONS STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT PRICE stated that VICE PRESIDENT CECI is celebrating his grandfather's birthday today. There is a talent show on October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in FDH 109. There is a free self-defense class being offered on October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They are giving flu shots for $5.00 each at the Student Health Center. This week is National Collegiate Awareness Week. There is a food collection event to benefit the Salvation Army from October 19th through the 23rd. Wednesday October 21st is the meet the regent candidates forum. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH asked everyone to vote for Senator of the year. He called a recess at 6:28. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH called the meeting back to order at 6:31. He stated that he has ordered the plaques for the Senate session and they are due on the 28th. They will be on the next Senate agenda for approval. He ordered plaques for some of the 4 SENATE MINUTES 28-34/ October 19, 1998 Senators who have graduated or resigned. He will send in for the plaque for Senator of the year. They are serving cheese lasagna at the banquet on November 1 st. He also introduced his father and stated that they went golfing today. He played worse than he has ever seen SENATOR ZARANTI play. SENATOR AUER asked what time is the banquet. SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH stated that it is at 5:00 in the alumni ballroom. He is planning a retreat for returning and new Senators and he would appreciate if they were there. GOOD OF THE SENATE SENATOR AUGUSTIN stated that it was wonderful to see another enlightening Rebel Yell article about Student Government on Thursday. He congratulated Rob Lujan and Alpha Gamma Delta and Lambda Chi Alpha for winning Homecoming. Last night he left his meeting and somebody slashed all of his organizations' tires. He stated that sometimes SENATOR FISK is right when he says that Greeks don't think alot. He asked everyone to keep their eyes and ears open. He stated that there is 5 to 6 thousand dollars worth of damage and it is ridiculous. He stated yes on the signs. SENATOR ZARANTI stated that the Rebel Yell Advisory Board is meeting on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in FDH 312. This past week he gave blood. He doesn't like the signs. He plays golf better than SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH sober. Good luck on midterms and this might be his last meeting. SENATOR RAMEY stated that the signs are O.K. SENATOR WEINBERG stated that he echoes SENATOR AUGUSTIN'S comments about the Rebel Yell. We have gotten blasted the last few months. Happy Birthday to SENATOR ZARANTI. No on the signs. SENATOR CARTWRIGHT stated yes on the signs. SENATOR CORDONE stated yes on the signs. SENATOR HEMINGTON stated yes on the signs and she is sorry they are not reusable. SENATOR JORY congratulated the homecoming King and the Queen and yes on the signs. SENATOR WHITAKER stated no on the signs. SENATOR MILMEISTER stated that there were 1800 votes for Homecoming. He abstains on the signs. SENATE MINUTES 28-34/ October 19, 1998 SENATOR AUER stated that she heard the BHS grand reopening was a success. She thanked SENATE PRESIDENT KIMBROUGH, PRESIDENT PRICE, and DIRECTOR JOHNS who are going to be dunked during Midterm Madness at the Paul McDermott Plaza. Yes on the signs. SENATOR PECK stated that she is O.K. with the signs. She is excited she can come to the Senate banquet. This is her last meeting and she has learned alot. (She told a joke.) She also congratulated the people who were successful in Homecoming. SENATOR GARCIA stated no on the signs. He is asking the Senators to participate in an attendance policy for the Directors. He is placing posters about Midterm Madness event in the Senate boxes. He spoke with a student who wants to start up a STARS organization in his college. SENATOR BINETTI stated no on the signs. SENATOR FISK stated that he hasn't ever said Greeks are stupid. He applauded DIRECTOR DALEY on the motor voter program. They are hoping to have a new Dean by July of next year. He had a two hour meeting today at 7:00 a.m. He opposes the signs because they are not sandwich boards. They should be re-submitted. He congratulated the Homecoming court and stated that SENATOR RAFFAIL is the first non-traditional student on the court. He spoke to Rachel Lam about her article and she thinks the budget should be publicized and candidates should have to attend a meeting before they can run. He also stated that he will miss SENATOR PECK. SENATOR RAFFAIL stated Happy Birthday to SENATOR ZARANTI. Yes on the signs. Homecoming was the third happiest weekend of her life and she had fun. It sucks there are not more pictures in the Rebel Yell. She also stated that SENATOR PECK will be missed. SENATOR DAVY stated yes on the signs. SENATOR KAWAZOE stated yes on the signs. Congratulations to the Homecoming winners. What happened to Lambda Chi was messed up. He saw another fight at the game and something needs to be done. He has been working alot at the Bellagio. He also congratulated the Senators who were re-elected. SENATOR CANEPA stated that she is disappointed in the Rebel Yell and the articles about the football team. She feels they should be supported. She is disappointed we lost but Homecoming was great. No on the signs. She also stated it was nice to see the candlelight vigil. SENATOR TRUJILLO congratulated the Homecoming Court. Yes on the signs. He will miss SENATOR PECK. He wants to be a regular Senator for his last meeting. He just realized that he is going to get Monday night football back. 6 SENATE MINUTES 28-34/ October 19, 1998 XI. ADJOURNMENT Motion to adjourn the meeting made by SENATOR TRUJILLO, seconded by SENATOR MILMEISTER. Move into a vote. Vote to adjourn passes 20-0-0.
