SAMMY LEE Dr. Sammy Lee, Olympic champion and one of the greatest eompetitiye divers of all time, will be one of the athletic immortals honored at the Sportsmen's World Awards June 28, at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. The World. Awards Presentation banquet is sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope Medical Center. Recipients of the coveted 'Victor' statuettes, symbolic of the Sportsmen's World Award, represent all-time greats in eleven categories of sports, and were chosen by a National Selections Committee of noted sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. Dr. Lee, a native Californian, gained national attention when he won the national AAU outdoor platform diving crown in 1940, representing Occidental College. He captured the senior 3-meter springboard, and. platform diving championships two years later, and repeated, as platform diving titlest in 1946. One of the most popular athletes at the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Village compounds, Dr. Lee was an outstanding ambassador of good will for the United States as he willingly and patiently gave tips on diving to competitors from around the world. In addition to winning the Olympic diving crowns in London and Helsinki in 1948 and 1952, respectively, Dr. Lee was awarded the James E. Sullivan Men's Trophy in 1953# as "the American athlete who did the most to advance the cause of good sportsmanship." Following a tour of duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Dr. Lee took up his medical practice as an ear-nose-throat specialist. His exemplary conduct as a competitor and sportsman is testimony to his popular selection as a member of the distinguished World Sportsmen's Award, company. # # # (x -I
