CIRCLE 6-1735 FINE FOOD ?╟≤ M COVER ?╟≤ WONDERFUL SHOWS AT 8 AND 12 ?╟≤ DINERS' CLUB Latin Is Reborn By EGBERT W. DANA. Out of its experience of IB memorable years, in which the fun-loving people of the nation, have derived immeasurable en-i joy men t, the Latin Quarter; last night was reborn in a! glamorous1 new setting pro-1 vided by the cafe?╟╓s original de-j signer, Rube Bodenhorn. With! one of the country's outstanding producers, Donn ArdenJ synchronizing a magical me-l lange of music, beauty and di-| verse talents, "International Holiday for Love?╟Ñ sent the young lady of Brpadway beyond a memorable milestone. The wbndrous changes that have been effected at the club contribute vastly to the customer?╟╓s comfort, vision and appreciation of tasteful enter-! tainment. An electronic system for lighting and special effects and a proscenium-type stage are startling changes to capture the fancy of Latin Quarter regulars. An all-new ensemble of beauties do great credit with their spirited and highly professional dancing in production numbers that will be the taM of the town for many dayfe. With costumes designed by Freddie Wittop and executed by the Eleue Costume Co., and with original music andi lyrics by Pony Sherrell and Phil Moody, they fairly light up the place with the exotic fun of it all. Headliners of the revue are jSallie Blair, a singer of irre- j jpressible force, and the Bernard Bros* whose comic pantomiming of records represents a slapstick technique [that is ingenious and almost Constantly mirth-provoking. | And, now for the rest Francis Brunn, French juggler, ( amazes with his acrobatic f handling of flying objects, so tnuch so that his finale is almost a summation of current events: udiunui s#9|diuai 6 up ajXoj AniM?╟÷V asnoH?╟÷Z Ot l uijij . E. MrLoew, now ?║ans ^ former partner Lou Walters, who is opening across, the street next fnonth, has refurbished the stage, gotten a new show and a new producer and indications point to ^continuation of the high esteem this club Is held by tourists and natives alike. The Latin Quarter?╟╓s fornial preem, was better than a usual opening, but still had a few kinks to be ironed out. The layout had the benefit of a few nights shake-down, which-apparently corrected some incipient defects. Tift opening night hadx the amplification * system caterwauling at given intervals, and still had some 30 minutes to be eliminated. The LQ general manager Eddie Risman has been achieving the miracle of Broadway as a nightly event. As the workman wind up about four p.m., Risman directs the removal of the scaffolding inside 1 the spot and the subsequent cleanup of the debris and the club is ready for action. It?╟╓s quite an un-[dertaking to refurbish the spot and (keep running at the same time. The resultant alterations indicates that the Latin Quarter will achieve a more intimate effect with virtually no difference in its capacity. The stage is shorter, but wider. The decor has been altered so that the atmosphere is lightened. The ruffled satin ceiling has been removed and a flat top installed. The fighting system has been enlarged so that the good part of the illumination comes from the ceiling. There?╟╓s an Austrian curtain and there?╟╓s a water curtain, which on the opening night splashed a few ringsiders, since a splashboard hadn?╟╓t yet been installed. A couple of birdcages with femmes inside ride the ceiling. The alterations jnake the LQ a more impressive showcase. Donh Arden hasn?╟╓t produced in New York area since his displays f at the now defunct Riviera at Ft. j Lee, N. J. He?╟╓s made an excellent ; start with this display: His production is imaginative and spright- ! ly. He?╟╓s given the club a pattern of operations which looks like a ! logical base for the shows. There are some highly imaginative mo- j. ments, the show is rapidly gaited and excellently costumed. In this display is a girl who takes a shower on stage. She shows more anatomy than has been displayed around here since the LaGuardia era. Much of the production was in the LQ show in Miami Beach. The headlines are shared by the Bernard Bros. (2) and Sallie Blair. The Bernards have worked this j shop previously with good effect i and repeat with equal calibre. The ; duo, work mainly in comedy femme 4 costumes and do some sprightly miming to recordings. They score solidly,\ Misk Blair is ^an exciting newcomer who comes on stage backed Cj by a trio comprising piano, drums j and conga drum battery. She?╟╓s a well garbed, and highly schooled in a sexy delivery. Act, by this Negro ! singer as presently constituted, is oVerdoiie in both arrangements, ! and presentation. She has enough substantial basics to get over with-out the extra dressing. She's going for sounds as well, an unnecessary t item, t since she can ntti***1 [ without gim 111 it 1" v | , |uo sv ?╟≤ -ua'O ^30 PP??H 1: /T ?╟? ?? mon?╟ uosanija sispvr ?╟╓S m . t t TrTx7-- ' I ?╟≤tisos
