POST MAY 22 1958 Mi Johnnie Ray headlines Dp?? Arden?╟╓s ?╟úInternational Holiday p for Love* revue at the Latin fe Quarter beginning tonight. & This Clipping From NEW YORK, m Y. JOURNAL-AMERICAN APR 23 1958 THE KNIGHT WATCH Latin Quarter a By G1NI KNIGHT .. fpHE NEW, BEAUTIFUL LATIN QUARTER?╟÷re-1. decorated and chanted structurally?╟÷reopened last night with a new, beautiful show on the largest night club Stage in Manhattan. And did turn-away business. The revue is entitled ?╟úInternational Holiday For Love.?╟╓?╟╓ But it could be called ?╟úDonn Arden?╟╓s Masterpiece,?╟Ñ For the real star of this whole proceed-lihg was young Donn, who pro-| duced the finished performance He staged a sparkling spectacle, It takes one-and-a-half hours to present the 12 acts and, from start to finish* there was never a dull moment. The show girls and ponies were new faces and new figures. Both beautiful. Costumes gorgeous. Choreography lively throughout. Only flaw I found in this new Latin Quarter show Was the band. While it could not be seen because it played behind a curtain, it certainly could be heard?╟÷and too loudly, v It drowned out, the voice of Sallie Blair, the whirlwind star, so scarcely a word she sang could be understood. Her own accompanists?╟÷drummer, pianist and bongo beater?╟÷-made too much noise, too. Those Bernard Brother^!jrst of the pantomime ?╟úsing^?╟Ñ;i$fi6 work with records (L heard them at the Versailles almost 15 years ago), remain the best. Production singer Martha Errolie has a splendidly trained voice. And a cute lil girl who made a big favorable impression was Gina Genardi, who sang, danced and introduced the leads in the finale. But it?╟╓s the over-all effect of ?╟úInternational Holiday For Love?╟Ñ that makes it such a resounding hit. This Clipping From NEW YORK, N. Y. JOURNAL AMERICAN m AY 26 1958 the Knight watch A Ray of By GENE KNIGHT liffQHAKE A HAND!/?╟╓ ^ lustily with all the fervor of an evangelist. Couples at tables shook hands with each other* then reached out to people at adjoining tables and shook hands with them, too. \ That?╟╓s the effect this exciting singer has on an audience. The place: the Latin Quarter. Time: Saturday night. Ray is the new star of ?╟úInternational Holiday For Love,?╟Ñ the lavish revue managing director, Eddie Risman is presenting at this famed night Club. And Johnnie certainly is a melodious magnet, for the ^enlarged, redecorated nitery was filled with seething customers. v He appeared thinner when he walked on. Modest, selfr-con-scious, too. Despite that operation, he?╟╓s ^stlll wearing an earpiece. Appealing Quality There?╟╓s an appealing quality about this young man. He won the audience with' his first shy smile. j Then, tense with emotion, he ^ sang ?╟úTonight, Josephine: ?╟Ñ ?╟úWalking { My Baby Back Home;* ?╟új^uch a Night.?╟Ñ | | They were done jerkly, in his distinctive style. Frequently, he sang softly (which was nice). At other times, he exploded dramatically (which was nice, too). i;{:y y y'M; - ?√ß Johnnie cart sing as loud as the next singer, but he couldn?╟╓t sing louder than Jo Lombardi's band.. Which, in my hearing, made entirely too much noise. But when Ray waved his arms; clapped his hands; snapped his fingers; -bent his knee; and sang?╟÷his face twisted by the torment of the tune ?╟÷why;, the crowd went crazy, that?╟╓s all. Clapped and snapped, too. Even yelled approval.' While Johnnie is a great entertainer and his old songs; still are popular, I think he would be greater .. if he got some new: numbers * replace ?╟úLittle White That: CTied;* ?╟úCryjg* ?╟úWalking in the Rain,?╟Ñ etc. These, in my opinion, have seen their day?╟÷and night. . t * j Newest I recognized Saturday night was ?╟úAll the Way,?╟Ñ which he put over very well, indeed. Best, I thought, was his rendition. of ?╟úWalk and Talk With the Lord.?╟Ñ It?╟╓s an exhausting performance this stars puts on; one that leaves the audience exhausted, too, but pleasantly so. Johnnie Ray is the only new act in ?╟úInternational Holiday For Love.?╟ÑRest of the Donn Arden extravaganza I reviewed^ the; night it opened about a month ago. It looked fine then ; it looked finer Saturday night. As I left the Latin Quarter, aMine of prpspective customers stretched down the stains and out onto the sidewalk. For there?╟╓s something electric about this Ray. Hey-Hey! If you hold a ticket in the Irish Sweepstakes, be sure to see a list of winning numbers, published as fast as they are received, in next Saturday?╟╓s and Sunday?╟╓s Journal-American.
