As I sit to write my first official bulletin article at Congregation Ner Tamid, I am struck by the pace that we live our lives here in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a city unlike any other place that I have ever lived in or visited. At times, Vegas seems very fairy tale-ish while at others it smacks of re?ality. What do I mean by that statement? Las Vegas, like many other cities depends on tourism, its' major industry. When the American economy is down, so too is the tourist industry in Vegas. Yet, Vegas also provides a means of es?capism that most people visit?ing the city cannot find anywhere else in the world. For this reason, we feel the American economy's highs and lows. We offer Americans and others of the world a place to play and escape reality. We have much to be grateful for even if politics and world events are not at a peaceful place right now. As we ap?proach Thanksgiving, I suggest that we take time out of our everyday lives to examine our riches. Regardless of what is going on in the news or other such events, we need to take time to remind those around us just how grateful we are to have them in our lives. We need to learn to say thank you more often even for those small acts. Let us also learn to practice ran?dom acts of kindness so that oth?ers will have reason to be thankful. When we look around at our tem?ple community, we have so much for which we should be grateful. We have an extended family at Congregation Ner Tamid. For that I am very thankful. So, as we contemplate what we will be doing and where we will be spending our Thanksgiving Day meals, let us take time to be thankful for all of the gifts that we have been given. Let us al|A think of those who may not ha'^r a dinner to attend and invite them into your home. As we are taught in Pirke Avot (The Say?ings of Our Ancestors), "Let your house be a meeting place for the wise, sit at their feet always, and drink in their words with thirst." And in the spirit of being grate?ful, I wish to say thank you to everyone at CNT. Thank you for your warm welcome. Thank you for allowing me to become a part of CNT's family. Thank you for helping to make Congregation Ner Tamid "A Special Place To Belong." (In case you want to write for the Bulletin and don?t know, the deadline for material is a whole month before the issue goes out.) It may look a little as if, come Rosh Hashanah, we all just pop into the temple and sit down for services, but really, an awful lot of planning and work go into making sure that both the services and the facility are ready for us. The planning and the work require the hearts and minds and hands of a sizeable number of our congregants and all of our staff. I thanked lots of people at various times during my announcements at services, but there may have been some people I either forgot or didn?t know about at those times, and besides, the work they did merits at least a second mention. So here goes?with apologies if even with time for a little reflection I still forget someone. On behalf of the congregation, a big thank you to Rabbi Akselrad and Rabbi Weiner for delivering a series of sermons that were both timely and inspiring. I know that many of you were not at the early (family) services, in which case you missed two wonderful parables delivered in a story-type format that was entertaining for the kids, yet conveyed a clear message about life and Jewish values. And I received many comments that Rabbi Akselrad?s sharing at Yizkor his story of personal loss touched many people very, very deeply. As it does every year, our adult choir contributed enormously to the beauty and the stateliness of our services. Our Cantorial Soloist Bella Feldman seems to outdo herself each year preparing the choir and herself for the Holidays. She is especially good at displaying the evolution of the Holiday liturgical music by adding just a little bit new, while keeping lots of the familiar traditional melodies, that summon up warm memories of past services in the company of our own parents and grandparents. Bella can?t sing all the parts, so kudos to all the members of the choir, to Peter Bugel who directs the choir, and to Rhonda Greeson, who accompanies both the choir and Bella. Maybe only a former choir member is aware of the number of rehearsal hours that go into making a perfect performance. At Yizkor, there were few dry eyes when Christy Molasky finished singing. This is a CNT tradition that we all look forward to and the question I got most is, why do we have to wait from one year to the next to hear Christy? At the family services, our teen choir provided the music. Again, if you missed the early service, you missed a wonderful experience. Lori continued on page 15 November 2001 A Special Place For the past year I have been sharing soulful writings and stories from a book entitled ?G-d Whispers? in my monthly articles. Each time I have turned to this book for inspiration and have not been let down. It seems I find some new meaning and am touched by a new life lesson or reminded of an old lesson which needs to be re-learned. Still experiencing the awe of the High Holidays, the theme of forgiveness jumped out at me. It was something we weren?t ready to talk about during Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur. The concept was difficult to even imagine, in light of our recent tragedy. E3ut I also know we cannot remain ?stuck?, we must move forward. I read: We must be aware of building gates that keep us out and maintaining boundaries that keep us in. Saying that life is a journey is more than a cliche?. It is a perspective. We must not fear to venture beyond our most basic assumptions of what is true and possible. Go forth into the unknown, with faith and courage ani^. most of all, with an expanded vision of who you can tl?' I find comfort and peace in these words and hope you may too. FORGIVENESS Forgiveness is the Great Mother of inner peace and calm. The wrongs of the world hold you prisoner When your heart can not Release the pain. To forgive is the ultimate act of self-love. Forgive out of kindness to yourself And out of the recognition That despite all the anger and confusion, G-d is everywhere. B?shalom, Beffa Going Grocery Shopping? Traveling? We are all still reeling from the acts of inhumanity that took place on September 11. Trying to get back to business and life?s pleasures has ||en very difficult for everyone. Your chil- ren are the spirit lifters. They stand for hope, the future, and continuation of Judaism. It is ironic that suddenly we are all showing our patriotism, flags and the colors red, white and blue are everywhere. This month we are supposed to remember and honor our veter?ans, yet few of us have ever gone to a parade to show our respect to the people who have protected our freedoms. In November we also celebrate Thanksgiving. Now more than ever these two holidays belong together. Without our veterans and our active military, our free?doms could disappear. We have a lot to be thankful for as Americans. Many times in his?tory our rights as Jews were attacked. First our enemies separated us and caused un?truths to feed anti-Semitic feelings. Then our schools were taken away, and then they tried to take our religion away. Some of us may not have voted for President Bush or even agree with some of his actions, but we need to heed his plea...??Go to your houses of prayer and pray?. ??Go home tonight and hug your children,? said President Bush. You must also do your part to teach your chil?dren respect of our veterans, our military and all who serve and protect us. Come to CNT as a family to pray with your temple family. Encourage your child to learn about their her?itage, and Hebrew, to keep the right to be Jew?ish strong. Let your children dream. We at CNT are dreaming of a better and big?ger CNT and a better world. May you have a Thanksgiving that nourishes your soul as well as your body. Shalom, Jackie f(eel(gp November 2001 CUT PRE/CHeei AM? KINBCMARTEN Fall is in the air and the boys and girls of Congregation Ner Tamid's Preschool and Kindergarten are hard at work and play. October was a fun filled month. We celebrated Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Nevada Day was observed by learning the history of our state. We had our "Back To School" Parents night and our annual Pancake Pajama day. Our students enjoyed a field trip to J.R. Farms and we had our portraits taken. This month of November, we also have many projects planned. The Kindergarten and Pre- K classes will be going on a field trip to the Rain Forest Cafe on the 7th. On November 8th we will have a representative from Nevada Child Seekers, finger printing our children . The boys and girls wilMearn about the weather when Dr. Jim Siebert, the Weather- man from Channel 3, comes to visit us on the 13th. We will talk about our countries Vet's, and other heroes who helped to make the USA great. Of course we will celebrate Thanksgiving with our own CNT preschool kindergarten style feast. Our youngsters will help cook a dinner and dress up as Pilgrims and Indians and travel on the Mayflower, just as our ancestors did many years ago. Our students and teachers are bonding as a family in our wonderful facility . It is a pleasure for us to see our school thriving and growing. Next month we will be preparing and executing our Chanukah program as well as learning all there is to know about this joyful holiday. All of the classes enjoy listening to stories, learning their numbers, letters, shapes, colors, about the weather, and the calendar. It is a pleasure to hear these little ones recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning and to listen to them singing in Hebrew, as well . We have a delightful group of students and a dedicated group of loving teachers, what a perfect mix. I am writing this article the day after the Sisterhood paid up luncheon. The luncheon was to thank all those members who joined or rejoined Sisterhood. 120 members were present for the luncheon and many of the 40 new members who joined this year were present. Sheryl Chenin-Webb and Donna Willey, the Vice-Presidents of Membership did a FANTASTIC JOB making all the Sisterhood members welcome and proud of the organization to which they belong. I want to thank Sheryl and Donna publicly for such a wonderful event. In Sisterhood?s effort to be more inclusive and span the generations, the new Sisterhood logo was unveiled at the luncheon, showing our ?new face?. You will start seeing our new logo on many things as we make the transition and use up our old stationary and supply of envelopes. Our Sisterhood Board members will now be wearing name badges with the new logo at Sisterhood events. Be sure to ask them about Sisterhood if you have any questions. It gives me great pleasure to announce Sisterhood?s activity ?sdule for this year. Sandy Stolberg, who is now the Vice sident of Programming has planned many fun and interesting programs. Maxine and her husband of 26 years, Steve, have one son and are soon to have a daughter-in-law, when Andrew marries in March. Maxine has been veiy involved at CNT, and is the past recipient of Congregant of the Year, as well as a past Sisterhood President. Marilyn Polovina Bulavsky, co-chairs the FUN-D 4 Youth. She has been in Southern Nevada 37 years after coming from Los Angeles. Marilyn?s entire family lives in Las Vegas, including her parents, sisters and their families.
