Rabbi Akselrad is Turning 50! Rabbi's 50th birthday is October 6th! His family would like to cordially invite you to share in this milestone of his life on Friday, October 5 at Shabbat services. Join family and friends in singing Happy Birthday and wish our dear Rabbi another 50 happy and healthy years.Temple President's Message Mario Letizia The time has come once again for CNT's annual Mensch of the Year! This year, we are very pleased to be able to provide a very different type of fundraising event. As many of you are aware, the event this year was set to honor a couple, Yaffa and David Dahan. With Yaffa's untimely death on July 26th, (may her name be a blessing) the event hit an understandable and necessary stop. It is with great pleasure that the Dahan family has chosen to continue the event, not only to honor David but to celebrate the amazing life of Yaffa Dahan. When we choose a Mensch (or Menschen) it is the intention to honor those who not only give to the Jewish community, but to the community at large. Truly the Dahans are worthy of this honor. David Dahan is best known for his position at Orgill/Singer, as well as his tireless efforts with the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the Jewish Federation, and AIPAC. He has recently been named as the President of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. Yaffa spoke five different languages - Hebrew, Yiddish, French, Arabic and English. Her educational achievements include an MBA in business management and a Ph.D. in administrative healthcare. She was a registered nurse for more than 28 years. She was a member of the Honors Society in Nursing at UNLV, and recently was honored as an outstanding alumnus. She was also involved in the Jewish Community AIPAC, the Jewish Federation and Healthcare in Nevada. CNT has always strived to provide the best in Jewish education, activity and spiritual learning through its many programs. With a new state of the art facility to support, our need for funds to continue our dream remains vital. Please join us on Saturday, November 17th at 6pm, as we honor a family to whom these things are equally important, and celebrate the life of a woman who worked tirelessly to make this community better for us all. Since opening last year we have gained over 120 new members. To give you a sense of scale, when I first joined the Congregation 20 years ago, we had about 60-70 families. We have grown by nearly 25 % in one year! This type of growth is both gratifying and challenging. As I have met many of the new members their stories have touched me. Some are simply thrilled that we are close by. by our new Preschool and our new programs. Still others have shared that the friendship and involvement that they have in the Temple has literally saved their lives. In short, every single family, every single person has a unique reason for joining our Temple. It is heartwarming to see the response to our Temple and to see the surge of activity and involvement. Yet, the challenge remains-how to remain a tight-knit community? To begin with everyone must realize that if you want to remain anonymous in a community it is easy to do. What many don't realize that it is just as easy to become a vibrant part. When you come to services you become an important part of the spiritual life of the Congregation. When you sing in the choir you bring an added sense of meaning to our services. When you join a chavurah or the Chesed committee or the social action committee you make a statement that you want to know the members of the community and you want to work together towards shared goals. A few weeks ago Marla Letizia, ourTemple President implemented a new policy of name badges for our Congregation. It is a simple "opt in" system where people can sign up for a free name badge as they enter the sanctuary on Friday night. Literally hundreds of people have asked for badges and wear them each week. Amazing! But knowing each others name is only the start, albeit an important start. Through involvement in committees, services, programs, religious school and adult education and other venues within the Jemple you will continue to create a more cohesive community. With such rapid growth it would be more than ^Pasy to come from one year to the next and ask"Who are all these people? I don't know anyone!" My challenge to you is to respond,"Who are all these people, I can't wait to get to know them!" Scientists have found that one of the keys to happiness throughout life is friendship. Let us share this sense of friendship with a renewed sense of commitment towards each and our community. Then truly will this new year be one that is blessed with a Congregation ever more caring, ever more friendly, and ever stronger because of it's membership. Jerusalem Synagogue in Prague October 2007 3 Just a Philip Goldstein, Cantorial Soloist I would like to take this opportunity to extend a special THANK YOU to all of the membd^^ of our Adult Choir for an outstanding job during the High Holidays! They worked very hard over the summer preparing and it truly paid off. I have heard wonderful reviews of their singing and truly appreciate all of their hard work. Someone even commented that this was the best choir they had ever heard for the High Holidays. I want to express my gratitude to our choir director John Smith for an outstanding job of preparing and conducting the choir. You have brought a renewed sense of meaning to the music and the choir responded to it. To Lillian Kollar... I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are the best accompanist I've had the pleasure of working with.Thank you so very much. A special thank you goes out to Andrew Smith for playing the Kol Nidre so dramatically for the late service. To Glori Rosenberger, Maxine Molinsky and Brad Torchin, thank you for making the healing service music so meaningful and touching. Every year, your amazing talents make it better and better. Thank you to Lori Frankl for making the Teen Choir sound so wonderful in the early services and Eddie Birch for his superb accompaniment. Also by now, you have no doubt heard the Shabbatones. Their new season began Sept.7th. What a great group of people and I feel so privileged to be singing all the wonderful music. I sound so much better because of their musical talents and I appreciate them all for their time, efforts and energy to make the Shabbatones what it is today. Thank you all for your wonderful talents and I look forward to a splendid new year of music here at Congregation NerTamid. As we lookahead to the New Year, may we all live in peace, good health and happiness. I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year! Irv Duchowny, Executive Director ere I sit, just before our huge weekend events unfold for this weekend (Sept. 7th weekend, as we need to turn in our articles one month prior), and I am just in awe. We have 10 programs happening this weekend, starting with a Young Adult Community Shabbat reception, with Tot Shabbat immediately following, with our President's wine and cheese reception for all new members following, with Friday Night services and our first Shabbatone service of the season, followed by our Oneg, Israeli dancing and docent tours. Tomorrow, we have a Bar Mitzvah service, along with our weekly Minyon group, and then, tomorrow evening we have our Selichot program to start the High Holiday season - picnic dinner, program, and service. But wait, there's more! Sunday we have our first day of Religious School (and we opened our pre-school with 25 students last week), followed by a parent meeting, and then, our Religious School Administration and Classroom buildings Consecration service. Three days later, we have our Rosh Hashanah services (Family service and Traditional service) and then of course, Yom Kippur services. Why go into all these details with everyone? Because I would like to acknowledge those who are making this all happen, those who work "behind the scenes". While everyone knows and see Rabbi, Philip, Lillian and Cookie on Friday nights, and some see Craig and Nancy at their jobs, this article is to thank and acknowledge those you usually don't see, who make the temple hum and all events (planned and some spontaneous) happen. I would like to thank, in no particular order, Mary, Lynette, Karen, Roberta, Jared, Kathy, and Carolyn for taking care of all the inner-workings of CNT - without your dedication and efforts, time and time again, we would not be able to function as we do. I also want to acknowledge a new culture that's been developing here at CNT - and that is, of our better utilizing fnose wonderful congregants who have volunteered their time and effort. Our volunteers are a wonderful ddition to our working staff, and without our terrific volunteers doing our website development, our phone answering, our phone calls to congregants (Happy and Healthy New Year calls, please join us for... fill in the blank event, etc), our envelope stuffing, tasks that need to get accomplished but our usual staff can't handle with normal daily and weekly tasks, we would not be able to provide all the services and programs we offer to our congregants and the community at large. So, THANK YOU to so many people who make CNT truly "A Special Place To Belong". Without you and your efforts, we would not be who we are. As always, I wish everyone L'ShanaTovah, and to be continued .... Irv King David Memorial Garden Shuva Plaque Service November 2 @ 6:45 pm In the King David Memorial Garden October 2007 5 Dir. of Early Childhood Education Lonnie Kritzler ? Happy New Year! I wish for you and yours a very happy and healthy year. Preschool is movi ahead at full speed. The children are running in each morning more than ready to beg their day. They have become accustomed with the routine, are making friends, and smiling through it all. It is truly a heartwarming sight! They have experienced a lot in these few short weeks, especially with the High Holy Days occurring so close to the opening of school. Eating apples and honey was certainly one of their favorites. Then the children helped decorate the temple's sukkah. It was an awesome experience watching them show off to their families their beautiful creations as they came to school every morning. To top it off, they marched through the temple offices singing and waving their flags for Simchat Torah. Needless to say, the preschool staff and I are kvelling and thankful for being part of this amazing program. For more information on our preschool, you can contact me at 632-2250 ext 215. October 2007 9 2007MENSCH OF THE TEAR DAVID DAHAN Celebrating the Life of Taffa Dahan Saturday, November 17, 2007 This year?s Mensch of the Tear, David Dahan, offers these words to friends and congregants - Dear Friends and Congregants, I am honored to have been chosen as your Mensch of the Tear and that my wonderful wife, Taffa, will be honored as well. Much of my accomplishments over the years are due to the encouragement and support of my life partner Taffa. She too was involved in so many ways, touching the lives of others through her work as a mother, nurse, author and her latest venture as head of the Mt. Charleston Hotel. She wanted to turn this hotel into a special place of a healing as well as recreation. It is with great sadness that Taffa passed away on July 26th. Tet, she knew about the honor and was looking forward to it so much. Rabbi Akselrad and the congregation have done so much for the community, having been at the forefront of inter-faith work and creating a wonderful new preschool, religious school and synagogue campus in Henderson. This is especially significant to me at this time as the incoming President of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. CNT has become a beacon of sacred principles that I think we all can share, just as I have shared a strong friendship with Rabbi Akselrad and the congregation. With the passing of Taffa, this connection has become even stronger. I hope that you will join me in supporting this major fundraiser, which provides a significant portion of the Temple?s annual budget. Monies raised allow the congregation to continue its programs for seniors, teens and holyday observance. The Temple has also agreed to donate a portion of the event proceeds to the UNLV Nursing Foundation, created in Taffa?s honor. I truly hope that you will celebrate this special event in my life, one that honors the values near to me and my beloved Taffa. Sincerely, David Dahan WWW.LVNERTAMID.ORG Y.A.C.
