Arts and Humanities Committee Report
The committee meeting was held on Wednesday, September 11,
1996, 6:30 p.m. at Marie Callender's on Tropicana and
Eastern.
Suggested programs for 1996-97:
I. Alpha Kappa Alpha Arts Recognition
A. Statement of need:
In order to enhance the recognition of African and
African-American contributions to the arts and
humanities, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will
recognize the significance of how the arts and
humanities have been a foundation in Black history.
B. Objectives:
The Alpha Kappa Alpha arts recognition project will:
1. focus on the importance of the African and
African-American fine arts and their effects on
Black history.
2. identify and highlight local artists and their
contributions to the arts.
3. sponsor an art fair which spotlights sorors as
artist.
4. encourage sorors to participate in Regional
competitions and award recognitions.
C. Activities:
January 1997
1. Guest speaker at sorority meeting.
* After or before the sorority meeting, we could
have a guest speaker from the community speak to
the sorority about the importance of the arts and
support.
2. Art fair at sorority meeting (may be combined
with above).
* After or before the sorority meetings we could
showcase and invite a guest speaker from the
community to speak with us on the subject of
the arts and humanities in the Black culture.

* Sorors' art, crafts, etc. would be displayed. We could also schedule a poetry reading or dramatic presentations of some sort.

Arts Recognition Award for a community artist who has made an outstanding contribution in the community at Founders' Day B
Criteria to be determined by the committee at a later date.
4.
Encourage sorors trained in the fine arts to participate and perform in sorority sponsored events (i.e. Founders' Day, socials, retreats, etc. )
II. Incentives for Young Black Artists
A.
Statement of need:
Many young Blacks have artistic talent, but are unable to enhance or cultivate those talents so that they may enrich their lives' and the lives of others. If opportunities were available where these young people could see other Blacks who have become successful in the fine arts field, in addition t<^ opportunities to perform such talents, their self- esteem, self-worth, and self-value may be enhanced.
B.
Objectives:
The incentives for young Black artists will:
1.
encourage and promote young Black artists who aspire to become professionals in their fields.
2.
expose young Black artists to cultural events and programs related to Africans and African- Americans in the fine arts.
C.
Activities
September 1996
1. encourage AKAteen participation and attendance in the WLV library's talent showcase.
2. sponsor AKAteens in attendance to at least two
(2) community cultural events:
Survey of AKAteens who are interested to be
conducted at the October meeting.
October/November 1996 (take AKAteens over after
the meeting)
