_57/ ACTION 1ACK SOM ?╟ Folies?╟╓ Impresario Keeps Show Sharp By Hilary L. Green In an age when Broadway shows can open and close in one night and our atten- tion spans have been drastically reduced by sound bites and hundreds of television channels, the fact that the ?╟ Tolies Bergere?╟Ñ at the Tropicana has been a fixture in Las Vegas since 1959 speaks volumes. Not only is ?╟úFolies?╟Ñ the longest-run- ning show in Las Vegas, but it is the longest-running production show in the country, outlasting its parent show, which opened in Paris in 1869. One of the key reasons for the success of ?╟úFolies?╟Ñ is that its director, award-winning Jerry Jackson, has been overseeing the production like a proud parent since 1975. In addition to his directorial duties, Jackson produces and choreographs the show. He also composed some of the score and designed costumes. Jackson has a rep- utation for excellence and is respected for the caring manner in which he relates to his cast. Jackson auditions performers from around the world and chooses the Finest in the business. Jackson studied dance at UCLA and earned a master?╟╓s degree in art. Among his credits are a stint as Fred Astaire?╟╓s assis- tant choreographer, his regular spot on Danny Kaye?╟╓s show and numerous televi- sion specials. He chuckles as he recalls being dissatisfied with the can-can num- ber and wanting to cut it from ?╟úFolies.?╟Ñ But after some tweaking, he reconsidered and kept it in the lineup. The number has gone on to win awards?╟÷and it?╟╓s considered the signature piece of the show. Early shows, which are covered, are open to all ages. Late shows are restricted to those 16 and older. ?╟úFolies Bergere?╟Ñ ?√ß Where* Tropicana ?√ß When ?╟≤ Fri.-Wed. ?√ß Information ?╟≤ 739-2222
