The Knoxville News-Sentinel Financial 14 Howard 4 Obituaries 4 Classified 5-17 KNOXVILLE, TENN. 37901, SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 20, 1969 * * * ?╟≤ Page C-l In Holiday on Ice, Aug. 11 at Coliseum Easter Eggs on Skates-a Surprising Feature By LINDA KELLEY News-Sentinel Staff Writer Everyone has heard of poached eggs on toast, but who has ever heard of Easter eggs on ice? The cast of the Holiday on Ice show for 1969-70 has. And on Aug. 11 at the Civic Coliseum, Knoxvillians will be able to see a dozen Easter "chicks" spin around the ice in one of the many colorful production numbers. In the 2%-hour fantasy the audience will see a year's worth of holidays whirl by in a maze of colors. Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, and the Fourth of July are some of the holidays represented in the costumes, valued at $475,000. The cost is so enormous because of the hand- stitching nearly every costume requires. Frank Foster, the wardrobe master, said that the sequins, rhinestones, and beads are hand-sewn to the rich velvets, gold lamps, and delicate chiffons of the costumes, which were designed by Freddy Wittop. Have Hands Full In previous years the seamstresses for HOI have had their hands full with finishing the outfits, which were originally made in Paris and New York. Now HOI has its own costume shop in New York, which opened last November. Wardrobe seamstresses here need only alter the costumes and add the finishing touches, according to Mrs. Beula Oakes, a Knoxvillian who has been a wardrobe supervisor for HOI for the past seven years. "I love working for HOI," said Mrs. Oakes, who lives at 412 Alleen Rd.. She is a seamstress most of the year, but suspends this activity to work for HOI whenever the show is rehearsing and performing in Konxville. Are Kept Busy She and the other 10 women who work with her are kept busy helping the 38 chorus girls, who have to make seven or eight changes during the show. With costumes this is anything but easy. The gowns for the first number, for example, which is the anniversary number in celebration of HOI's 25th year, are long, white dresses, embroidered with tiny mirrors and weighing 45 pounds each Pantsdresses are the "in thing" with HOI this year, too. The chorus girls will wear velvet ones with sequined bra-tops, capes and rhinestone chain belts. Some of these outfits, and some like one modeled by skater Roxanne Maxcy in the accompanying picture, cost about $1,800. Somebody may follow and hold up her train. ladies and gentlemen will have an HOI Easter parade, wearing costumes modeled after the early 1900s. The girls, wearing $500 and $800 gowns, will tote parasols which cost $65 or $85 each. The grand finale number is, of course, Christmas. And Christmas has never been so vivid as it will be when celebrated by 20 of the HOI performers, who glide along the ice wearing seven-foot-wide skirts of candles and greenery. Other girls will wear hoop skirts with 120 electric lights blinking underneath them. The members of the boy chorus, not to be outdone, will wear scarlet-red Santa outfits, trimmed in bunny fur. Though some of the costumes are bulky or heavy, the performers will have little trouble keeping in step, with the help of the precise directing of Donn Arden, of Las Vegas, who has directed and staged HOI off and on since 1942. But the male skater who will wear the toy soldier costume in the Christmas production number will need more than good directing to get him through that number?╟÷the costume weighs about 200 pounds.
