“TEA ROSE TALK"PRESIDENT: SOROR KAWEEDA &. AbAtASEDITOR: SOROR MARIAN D. BURNSJANUARY, 2002
A WORD FROM
OUR BASILEUS...
Dear Sorors,
Our Founders1 bay celebration is
moving along fine. We have an
outstanding day planned so be
sure to purchase your tickets.
The occasion promises to be one
to remember. Our Mardi Gras
Ball is moving along. We are still
looking for a band and more
information will be forthcoming
at the February meeting. Sorors
are reminded that the February
meeting is at the new St. James
the Apostle Catholic Church,
1920 Martin Luther King, Jr.
Drive at 1:00 pm on Saturday,
February 9, 2002.
Congratulations to Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc. Theta
Theta Omega Chapter for
receiving the first place trophy
for our entry in the Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day Parade.
Thank you to Soror Diane Stith
for the use of her car in the
parade. The AKAteens received
second place in their category.
Thank yous are extended to
Sorors Belisa Brownlee, Tina
Rimmey, and Domini Calloway for
their support and participation in
the parade and their leadership
with the AKAteens.
Packets for Regional Conference
will be distributed at the
February 9th meeting. The
deadline for registration is
February 28th. We will need to
vote on our regional delegates at
the February meeting. We are
entitled to seven delegates as we
only have sixty-five financial
members at this time. If we
have over eighty-six financial
members by the end of the
month, the delegate count goes
up to eight. Sorors are
reminded to pay their dues now,
so that we have voting power at
the regional conference.
The nominating committee will
present a ballot at the next
meeting. Please contact Soror
Bertha Pendelton if you are
interested in being a delegate.
You may call her at 242-6375 or
fax her at 242-8614.
The chapter operations workshop
was conducted in January.
Officers and Committee Chairs
are reminded to have all reports
typed and submit four copies. A
copy to the Basileus, 1st or 2nd
Anti-Basileus, Grammateus, and
one for the officer's/committee
J?
chair's binder which contains
everything from that committee.
In closing, thank you to Sorors
Willa White, Sharon Walton, and
Billie Rayford for their support
as presenters at the Graduate
Advisors' Retreat in January.
Thanks for always assisting when
asked.
Sorors, let's keep working
together and living the dream.
Remember our ancestors not only
in the month of February, but all
year long.
Sisterly,
Soror Kaweeda

A WORD FROM THE
EDITOR
Sorors,
As Freddie Kruger would say, “
I* SHE’S BACKkkkkkk"...Hopefully,
everyone had a joyful New Year’s
Celebration, and we can begin
another exciting year - really
geared up for all Theta Theta *s
community activities and projects.
In 2001, I am certain that each of
us had many, many blessings and
fewer unforeseen obstacles and
tragedies. For the New Year we
have so much to hope for -
continued health, more positiveness,
stronger family ties, and safety for
our families,country, and leaders.
I am ecstatic with excitement about
the new direction that our Chapter
is headed toward. Our Basileus,
First & Second Anti-Basileus, and
all of the newly installed officers
have a lot to offer Theta Theta in
the way of leadership and vision for
the future. We all know and should
understand that it is not an easy
task to run a business as diverse as
ours. For our continuous success, it
requires hard work from all sorors,
not a few. are not a dub, we
are a business and we should
continue to treat it as such.
Operating Alpha Kappa Alpha is a
very serious matter. We have much
to look forward to achieving with
the addition of our new sorors and
those that have joined us from
other chapters and of course our
reactivated sorors.
As the editor again of our
newsletter, I will attempt to limit
my writing to little blurbs, news
briefs, reminders, events and things
about the Chapter that you may or
may not get in the sorority meeting.
I want you to be informed,
entertained and I welcome all of
your comments, contributions and
your creative ideas.
Our Basileus, Soror Kaweeda Adams
has challenged all of us in the Year
2002, to uplift, embrace and make
a concerted effort to work hard
with a more "sisterly" spirit to
strengthen our sisterhood as we
work together to service mankind.
Sorors, let us not forget the
purpose of our journey as members
of the FIRST and the FINEST
sorority. Our founders had the
spirit and courage to stand strong,
organize and move forward for the
good of the sorority. We as sorors
have benefited from a long and
glorious legacy built by our
founders. Now we must be the
carriers of Merit and Culture. Let's
all move ahead into 2002 with plans
on being filthy rich with all of the
jewels our sorority has to offer I!
Sorors, We are the Vine that Binds!
Yours in sisterhood,
Soror Marian Burns

A WORD FROM
THE EDITOR
Dear Sorors,
The things for which
you are responsible
are the things over
which you have control. If
you attempt to seize
control, you'll be met with
fierce resistance. Yet when
you offer to accept
responsibility, you'll be
welcomed with open arms.
Lots of people are quick to
claim "it's not my
responsibility." By so doing,
they deny themselves the
best opportunities. If you
desire to have an influence,
if you desire to make an
impact, you must be willing
to take responsibility.
Those who fail to exercise
their responsibilities quickly
lose them. Those who step
up and take responsibility
when no one else is willing to
do so, consistently expand
their level of influence and
authority.
Influence, effectiveness and
achievement are earned, and
responsibility is a critical
part of the process. Any
time there's a need for
someone to take
responsibility, there's an
enormous opportunity. Those
who have the foresight to
accept it will rise quickly to
ever-increasing success.
As Sorors of the First and
Finest sorority that is built
on the basis of Education
and Service to Mankind; it
is our sole responsibility to
"step up to the plate" to
provide money for
scholarships to our local
deserving seniors. And how
do we provide these
scholarships? By supporting
our major fundraising
activity, which is our annual
Mardi Gras Ball by selling
tickets and ads for our
souvenir journal.
I will not "ride a dead
horse", however, I would
like for each of you to
picture yourself as being in
the last game of the World
Series and you are the last
batter up to the plate and
you strike out. What will
the fans remember?...THE
NAME OF THE LOSING
TEAM; NOT the name of
the batter that struck out.
Sorors, if our Ball is not as
successful as we know that
it should and could be
because “we" did not accept
our responsibilities; all the
members of Theta Theta
Omega Chapter lose, not
just a few!
We can do it, because we
are The Vine that Binds /
Sisterly,

5th Las Vegas Vocal Extravaganza
In Black III
You are invited to attend the Las
Vegas Vocal Extravaganza in
Black on March 18, 2002 at the
Theatre Des Art, Paris Hotel.
This event is held as one of the
outstanding cultural evenings of
the year. The enthralling
performances of these fresh
talented young people are
guaranteed to thrill. The choirs
representing four of the
Historically Black Colleges in
America, have performed
throughout the United and
Europe.
Each of these schools has it own
rich history in the evaluation of
Black Music. They have all, been
through trials and tribulations in
an effort to sustain and maintain
their moral integrity and
educational pursuit of excellence.
You could describe this event as
a centennial gathering of icons as
all of the schools are over one
hundred years old. They
actually experienced the various
musical variations that evolved
from the root of Black Music,
the spiritual. Hampton
University, 1870 was well
grounded in the foundation of
Black Music through the
development of the Hampton
Singers later to be known as the
Hampton Institute Singers and
now the Hampton University
Concert Choir. Hampton will
provide outstanding renditions of
choral selections. LeMoyne-
Owen College of Memphis
Tennessee, Bennett College of
Greensboro, North Carolina and
Kentucky State University of
Frankfort, Kentucky will join
Hampton. Kentucky State tours
extensively in the U.S. &
Europe, was founded in 186 as a
normal school for the training of
Black teachers. Today, Kentucky
State hosts Master degree
programs and Baccalaureate
degrees in 29 majors. Their
music department is held as one
of the finest in the country,
featuring their 44 voice
University Concert Choir.
The 2002 Vas Vegas Vocal
Extravaganza will feature an all
girls choir from the famous
Bennett College. In 1873
Bennett College was envisioned
and founded as co-educational
institution by a group of former
slaves. They brought the land
and with the assistance of Lyman
Bennett built the first building
housing classrooms and a
dormitory. The school was
designated as women's college in
1926. Bennett affiliated with
the United Methodist Church has
had an outstanding choir for over
(75) years and is recognized as
one of the outstanding quality
female choirs.
The Lemoyne-Owen College in its
one hundred-forty (140) years
has proudly and consistently
sought to fashion a model, which
would craft graduates of
integrity, merit, and dignity.
Stephen L. Hayes is a Savannah
Simmons Professor of Music and
among America's most celebrated
choral conductors. His
experience, charisma, and
professional standing have
elevated the distinction of the
LeMoyne-Owen Choral tradition
to another level. The College
Concert Choir has received
numerous invitations to appear
with the Memphis Symphony
Orchestra.
The College Concert Choir has
also made appearances, with
Academy Award actor, Sidney
Poitier and theatre/movie
pioneering actors, Ossie Davis
and Ruby Dee.

membership during the association's
Annual Conference. If approved, the
recommendations become part of the
American County Platform, which is the
basis of NACo's efforts in representing
counties before Congress and the White
House.
NACo is the only national organization
representing county governments in the
United States.
Congratulations Soror Veriia. You
make Theta Theta Omega proud.

Congratulations to Soror Domini
Calloway!
On September 12, 2002, Soror Domini
passed her state examination to become
a Certified Residential Appraiser. There
are three levels of appraising, and she
now at the second level. She can
appraise houses over 1 million dollars,
small income producing business and
properties, and of course her bread and
butter houses. There are approximately

800 appraisers in the state, but only
about 10 African-Americans, and of that
number there were only 3, and she now
makes the 4th. (Her mother is one of the
3.) I do believe that out of the 4, she
ranked the second to the highest. She
says and I quote, " As I am not a
Certified General appraiser. I shall
conquer that test, hopefully in the next 6-
12 months. I just wanted my Sorors to
share in my achievement."
CONDOLENCES:
Please keep Soror Clair Hart in your
prayers as she has returned from
California and will begin making
memorial service arrangements for her
father.
Please keep Soror Quin Rivers in your
prayers. Soror Quin is making daily
visits to the nursing home to care for her
ailing grandmother. This is very
draining for her and her spirits need
lifting. She needs our support
and encouragement.
Soror Jacki Brown . Please keep the
family in your prayers.
"People are always blaming their
circumstances for what they are. I don't
believe in circumstances. The people
who get on in this world are the people
who get up and look for the
circumstances they want, and, if they
can't find them, make them.”
~ George Bernard Shaw
