This Clipping from NEW YORK, N. Y. MORNING TELEGRAPH WHEN THE 5M5 WE BUT... by Gean Orlin MIAMI AFTER DARK AT THE LATIN QUARTER (Broadway at 48th Street) Adorable singing star, Jaye P. Morgan, currently starring at the glamorous Latin Quarter got her name in the cutest way. In high school as class treasurer, her! conscientousness in keeping the G. O. ledgers prompted her classmates to knicki name her "J. P." Morgan, after the noted banker. And, you know something, she's more than lived up to the "tag" being almost as successful in her chosen profession] as the late financier was in his. Not exactly being an early riser, we never heardj heard Miss Morgan when she was making show business history on Robert Q.; Lewis' daytime CBS radio program a few seasons ago. It wasn't until we visitedj the Havana Riviera last year that these jaded eyes and ears had the pleasure Jaye P. sure has come a long way in a comparatively short time. For, despite) the fact that she's been appearing before the public since the age of three, in vaudeville act with her family, she didn't really "count" until she won an audition at Hollywood's famed Palladium to sing with Frank De Vol's band less than a decade ago. For three years, Jaye thrushed with De Vol and evolved thei style that eventually made her a star. Shortly afterwards, she joined Robert Q. Lewis and was really on her way. RCA Victor signed her and she clicked witrj her very first record, "That's All I Want From You" ?╟÷ 'member her unique and haunting delivery? Subsequently, a succession of smash hits including "Danger Heartbreak Ahead" and "The Longest Walk." She's consistently headlined or,| most of the major TV network shows with, Sullivan, Como, Steve Allen, Dinah Shore? Jackie Gleason and Pat Boone. Her ap^j pearances at the Coconut Grove in Lo? Angeles, Fontainebleau a n d Americans hotels in Miami Beach, Palmer House ir( Chicago, always broke records and addec to her stature as a performer. At the LatirV Quarter, where she's headlining in Dornf Arden's spectacular revue, "All Aboui Dames" Jaye P. has the assist of her four Honest to goodness brothers, Bob, DickJ Duke and Charles, all talented singers and instrumentalists. Sooo, you might sayj the family, or a good part of it, are reunited once again. Actually, Jaye P. can stand alone. However, the brothers are a wonderful background for her and un-| doubtedly keep the wolves away, especially on the road! Morey Amsterdam, that irrepressible one, is extra added attraction and keeps the laffs coming fast a.nS often. His wit and delivery are like trigger-lightening and consequently he "throws away" more material than many comedians have in their entire acts. In a capsule, he dishes out the laffs faster than you can listen! Morey has long been one of our favorites since his Playgoer Cafe days and on TV and radio. Francis Bruun, the Continental, hailed as the world's greatest juggler, is another major attraction, as are the bevy of new ensemble beauties who parade about in $120,000 of costuming; songstress Pony Sherrell; Ron Lewis and Joyce Roberts, outstanding musical comedy dancers; Boubouka, exotic Greek beauty in her American debut; and Tanya Corlette, the Australian goddess. Dick Curry of the deep dimples, blue blue eyes, and booming baritone, is production singer. Mitsuko Morigai, former No. One model of Japan, is another eye-filling treat. Music by Jo Lombardi and his ork, with Buddy Harlowe's band alternating. Performances nitely at 8 and 12. Never a cover charge. Not so incidentally, the Latin Quarter remains onie of Broadway's greatest success stories. Now 17 years old, it has never wavered from its original policy of ALWAYS GIVING THE PUBLIC ITS MONEY'S WORTH, GREAT STARS, GORGEOUS GIRLS, DELICIOUS FOOD, ALL AT MODERATE COST! Sooo, don't ever again ask us the ingredients that go into making a successful nite club operation? We just gave them to you! Betty Grable in Engaging Stint at Latin Quarter by Morey Amsterdam MIAMI,: Jan. 27, PIC: Betty Grable in her twice* ghtly romps at the Latin Quarter. The Grable gams are as jghapely and lovely as in her first moviej days, albeit she is past the forty mark. In itself, that should draw the matrons set in heavy numbers, for a glimpse ^?√ßof a young-in- heart who looks young-in-face, and figure! And, in her act, Miss Grable is very much an at-home, in-person personality,, full of vitality, stepping high with a group of lithe young male aides. That her vocabilitx is not what one would call "full" in the belting j songstress sense, her chic, charm and a sly look about it all, makes her easy to take. Visually, she's a delight to watch as she works with her group, joins with a recruit from the L. Q. line ranks in a "twin-number" during which she is as markedly graceful and tap-talented as her younger visa-vis . . . Jay Lawrence is new in the comedy spot and turns in smooth, underplayed, intelligent assortment of comedies. Per always, his fight announcer bit is a laugh highlight. The Donn Arden production is izeslfuTand zingy as ever. Lary Solloway PRETTY, fa | 6 Us Angles Herald & Express H * Wednesday, June 10,1959 Marineland Show Premiere Brilliant (Photo on A-14) By JIMMY STARR Spectacular is an adjective often used in show business, but it ideally fits the big entertainment i splash Frank Sennes presents; " i at Marineland of the Pacific. | The title of this awe-inspir- [ing extravaganza is "The Friday, February 27, 1959 eyww\ Starlight Spectacular and Aqua Show," and it is i staged and directed by Donn Arden, who has accomplished the same applause- ing chores for the Mou- ?√ß lin Rouge, the Desert Inn (in Las Vegas) and several lavish Paris revues. Opening last night, there were a dozen cleverly concocted acts and ensembles?╟÷ everything ?╟÷ including acro- hats, water ballet, Africana dances, ponies, a baby elephant, wizards (under the blue sky big top), champion high divers and a colorful skyrocket display for a grand finale. There isn't a phase of show business that didn't get into the act. A delight for young and old alike. There was Orwin Harvey, a comic highdiver, such water champs as Mack Brown, Willie Ferrell, Jane Aull and the Aquabelles, Russ Saunders, Val Inman, Paua Del; the Hiawatha Liberty Ponies, Paul and Paulette, Chandra Kaly, the Wazzan Troupe, Jack Wallace (a clever mimic). McGuire DESERT INN Las Vegas.?╟÷Chalk up a "well done" }r Donn Arden's new, gay, sparkling now starring the McGuire Sisters and maturing Paul Gilbert. SRO opening - night audience went =>iap happy from the opening production number "Little Red Riding, and The Hoods" to the conclusion. This is one of the best all - round entertainment packages presented on the Strip in some time. In the second production number, "Man! Like Spring," Myrna March and Art Johnson vocalized while the Donn Arden Dancers went through new routines. Gilbert panicked 'em with his fast, smooth patter and his takeoff on a medic scored especially well. This all set the stage for the top- liners who received a tremendous ovation before and after each song. The McGuire Sisters, Chris, Phyllis and Dottie, were never better. Their 1 0 top numbers included "Sincerely," "Pennies From Heaven," "One Fine Day" and a novel number, "Work," in which Phyllis did an acceptable pantomime. Murray Kane batoned the Charlton Hayes orchestra for the girls. The show is strictly for family entertainment, an aspect becoming increasingly rare in Vegas, alias Nudesville. ?╟÷ Gene Tuttle. DESERT INN ($3 Minimum) [ . March 1. ?╟÷ The Sisters, with their refreshing* animation and distinctive song-styling have bounced back into the Painted Desert Room. Chris, Phyllis and Dottie, whose show biz savvy seems to improve with each Vegas outing, offer a good solid turn. Included in their repertoire is "Pennies From Heaven," "Picnic," "Something's Got To Give," "He," "Run, Run, Run," "Sincerely," "One Fine Day," "Daddy," "That's My Weakness Now" and their latest disclick, "May You Always." The girls also click as terpers, and the act is smoothly woven by the baton of Murray Kane, fronting the Carlton Hayes orch (12). Paul Gilbert, now a comedian of major league proportions, is a strong- balancer for the bill. His very funny fasties and skits include a batch of new material plus a welcome revival of the standard routines with which he's identified. Two new production numbers concocted by the fertile artisty of Donn Arden are outstanding, tabbed "Man! Like Spring!" and "Little Red Riding and the Hood." Both feature the fine songology of Myrna March and Art Johnson, who are decorously surrounded by the Arden Dancers (14). Show is set for four frames. Duke.
