50 yVAIJDEVHJLE [ Another Opening But ft?╟╓s Not Just ?╟ Another?╟╓ Show?╟÷Lido the Champ! ^etlnesday, January 13, I960 Paris, Dec, 22. / Pierre-Louis Guerin and Rene Fraday wisely don't try to rewrite l a hit as they go back to an annual change basis with this show. The tasteful French tableaux, costumes and undraping continue, enhanced by U.S. additions in torrid terp, pace and movement, leavened with Lcxpertly picked and packaged acts, and heightened by sensational j meccano effects! In this case the I very form of the show is a meehan- l loal success and the fillip Mi 16?╟÷ [count ?╟╓em?╟÷16 horsey which bring lih the chorus line and a seal that |4savorts in a pool. A new wrinkle has the orch in I* bandstand built over the right [Bide of the back stage. This gives I more live music and les$ canned j Backing, which is a help in certain I numbers and acts. It starts with jthe usual intro of the high step- rping, goodlookiHig Bluebell Girls I (16) who cover the raised runway I with electric ease and also go into I the stage behind it for fine line I effects. Arthur Maxwell sets the I theme and mood for each number I with his okay piping; Reuby Bruce I adds her bright, twinkling and I Bupple nudity to spice up things [and the Gerrpan twins, Ellen & I Alice Kessler, promoted to feature [terp and song billing from the | Bluebells, display a nice, fresh I revue talent plus their terp know- jhow and sinewy beauty and ele- | gance. ' , A Scots number has the Dagen hafn Girl Pipers (8) adding fresh- ness and gay innocence as. they I come swirling through with High- land flings, bagpipes and sabre I rattling and catchy military bits! for a heat segue into the morel garish nitery aspects. Then the! backstage turns into the Kremlin [ and a bright rushing scene of I Ru^so Czarist dahcing comes on I with the right vulgarization for | house needs and color. It is graced I by the ice 1 skating talents of Nancy Dee Parker & Nicky Powers and the bounding dynamism of the I Two Ivans. / The finale turns to the raucous I circus for its color and spirit and after the usual clowns, girls and I parades, settles down 'for -a. gratae- ful trapeze bit with Tosca de LacH (5) and her girls. The Lido Models (8) are threaded in throughout for a tasty bit of nudity and the Arden-Lewis Dancers (6) supply the male hoofing answer to the Wo, Pam wtm I mi96o Continued from page s. ?√ß highfalutin?╟╓ gong synt ^ . As usual, the stage is bouncing with hilarious mayhem. Senior partner Eddie Jackson, ap- parently recovered from his illness, does more in this show than he did last time around, and junior partner Sonny King is the target of most of Durante's side- splitting physical abuse -?╟÷ almost a literal term, since Jimmy hit him in the side with his elbow and doubled him up. Durante received the President's Award from the American Legion Founders Wednesday night when his birthday was celebrated onstage, and this week Variety Club Tent 39 of Las Vegas will present him with a special citation in appreciation for the many chari- table things he's done both for the local group and the national organization^ The Variety award to Durante is crjiighlight of the Variety Week celebration which fnjfe^unday. The ol' VF joins those who salute the weotSchnozz. Wm c> No "Catastatrope" ?╟÷ Just Howls ?╟÷ Of Laughter JIMMY DURANTE never gets ?╟úold- er?╟Ñ. He just gets ?╟úbetter?╟Ñ. His present show at Wilbur Clark?╟╓s Desert Inn just proves those opening words. The Paint- ed Desert Room rocks with ?╟úyocks?╟Ñ as Jimmy (in person) Durante cavorts with EDDIE JACKSON, SONNY KING, JACK ROTH and JULES BUFFANO. The audience is in stitches but it would seem that Sonny King is the one who really needs them. Sonny is the per- fect foil for the ?╟úrugged?╟Ñ Durante and (once in a while) gets a chance: to de- liver beautiful notes with his fine voice. Eddie Jackson struts as only he can as he brings home ?╟úBill Bailey?╟Ñ and Jimmy keeps them all (including his harem) in confusion and none more so than Maestro CARLTON HAYES and his Orchestra as they keep the music up to the Durante tempo. Johnny Mack will delight you with his dance as will Sally Davis in her hri^f-ejoqpnnter vHfb?╟÷ ^Ihe ?╟úmortite^iQneyDONN ARDEN?╟╓S ?╟ú production of bringing Up Baby?╟Ñ is a delightful bit of fantasy and ?╟úDaddy Doll?╟Ñ ART JOHNSON and his ?╟úMy Fair Baby?╟Ñ JOYCE ROBERTS are excellent as the leads in this imaginative number. DESERT INN ($3. Minimum) r Las Vegas, Feb. 11. ?╟÷ Jimmy Durante brings his company back retaining a major portion of his classic nonsense and adding some bits which weren?╟╓t seen here on his previous outing. Eddie Jackson, apparently completely recovered from his recent ailment, is given more to do this time. It is still ?╟újunior partner?╟Ñ Sonny King who absorbs the hilarious physical abuse from the master. Together, the trio tosses some dandy song and dancery. Johnny Mack, the handsome tap- ster, gives strong assistance with his smooth foot and cane trickery. Rotund terper Sally Davis, drum- mer Jack Roth and 88?╟╓er Jules Buffano add to the pleasing may- hem. Fernanda Montel, making her Las Vegas debut, is a stately blonde ?╜ looker from Paris who combines sophistication and anima- tion in her songalog. Her well- balanced repertoire is topped by a dramatic ?╟úMy Man.?╟Ñ New Donn Arden production number called ?╟úBringing Up Baby?╟Ñ is one of his best to date. ?╟úMy Fair Baby?╟Ñ Joyce Roberts and ?╟úDaddy Doll?╟Ñ Art Johnson score solidly as singing leads in the very clever miniature musicale.
