Though you are reading this article in November I am writing it the first week in October. I wanted to share with all of you an epiphany I had during the High Holy Days that might serve to inspire the rest of you. As I sat on the Bimah watching all of the members of our congregation enjoy the readings, music and sermons, I began to recollect just how I had ended up as president of CNTH! It certainly was not a position I had planned for or ever expected. I often say one never chooses this job it chooses you. I began to recollect back to the one inspiring moment that lead me to this moment in my life. It actually began on the night of Kol Nidre many, many years ago. It seemed that for my husband and I the long struggle of beginning a business while raising newborns had begun to ease up a bit and for once we were feeling a bit of financial relief. I could look beyond just making ends meet. I remember sitting down the evening of Kol Nidre for services and opening the honors booklet and looking through it to see the many names listed. Our names were listed very near the back pages. As I looked through, one name stood out. On the Silver Page was one single name, it was Todd Marshall. I have known Todd and his family for years, however, I never really knew Todd well. I was struck by the fact that this quiet, gentle man was there on that page of giving all by himself. He had chosen a level of giving that was beyond his other family members and most all of his peers. And, perhaps it was none of my business, but I began to wonder why????? What caused him to step up to the plate and give to that level?? For the rest of the year I remembered that selfless gesture of his and pondered it over and over. When the next year came, there was his name again, by himself in the silver category. I wondered, again and again, what was it that Todd felt and why was he so committed. Was it that he had learned tzedakah from his family and this was just natural for him? Was it that he saw others in larger categories than himself that inspired him in the same way that I was inspired when I saw his name? Or, was it that he had two small girls that he felt strongly he needed to set an example for? And, of course, there may be a reason 1 will never know. But, none the less,Todd Marshall inspired me to begin to discover for myself what giving and contributing to my synagogue might do for my inner soul. The path for me has been an incredible one, and it did lead right to the presidency. Along the way, I was Chairman of the Kol Nidre campaign and I was fortunate enough to ask Todd to co-chair that with me which he did do. During our 4 months of working together I never did tell him what an incredible inspiration he had been to me nor why I had chosen to ask him to co-chair with me. This year, during Yom Kippur, just after the healing service I did get the opportunity to pull him aside and tell him exactly this story and how grateful I was that he had very unexpectedly given me inspiration. And, that his inspiration had lead me right to the presidency of CNT. It felt so good to see how touched he was by my story and yet ever so quietly humbled. cont. on page 3 2007-08 Temple Board President - Marla Letizia marla@BigT.com VP Administration - Harry Sax harrydotcom@cox.net VP Ways & Means - David Rounds drounds@uptimelv.com VP Youth & Education - Beth Falk bethf12W@aol.com VP Ritual - Del Acosta dacosta6@cox.net VP Member Recruitment - Lisa Skurow lskurow@yahoo.com VP Member Retention - Marsha Goldberg decagon12@aol.com VP Social Action - Cindy Jensen ckjensen@cox.net Treasurer - Gregg Solomon ghsolomon@intellectualgaming.com Corporate Secretary - Yvonne Gordon tobeach@hotmaii.com Trustees Barry Lewisohn blewisohn@aol.com Debra Cohen debra.cohen@wachoviasec.com Stacey Yahraus Lewis stacey21704@aol.com Daryl Alterwitz dalterwitz@cox.net lllisa Polis illisa_h@yahoo.com Craig Kurtzman bigk23637@aol.com Mark Bromberg mrb4651 @aoi.com Jacky Rosen siegfried7@aoi.com Amy Christensen amyc@BigT.com Laura Bailey, Sisterhood President cntsisterhood@cox.net Stu Solomon, Men's Club President stuart.solomon@cntmentsclub.org Stephanie Watman, NTTY President namtawgurl@aol.com Past Presidents Scott Stolberg Dr. DavidWasserman Dr. Stewart Blumenfeld Drew Levy Bob Unger Jerry Gordon Cal Lewis Eileen Kollins Kenneth Schnitzer Jeff Kahn Dr. Steve Kollic Hon. Twenty years ago I was asked to serve as your rabbi - a week shy of my 30th birthday. I remember the day well as it was during succot. When I returned "home" to Columbus Ohio where I was the Associate Rabbi of an 1200 family asking in the glow of my 50th birthday celebration, I am so grateful to everyone who sent gifts, cards or other expressions of love and support to me. Too many in fact to A Birthday Celebration to be Remembered Rabbi Sanford Akselrad congregation, I remember my feelings of ambivalence when I greeted my close friends at my thirtieth birthday party. I had to share with them the sad news that Joni and I (and baby CJ!) would be off for new adventures in Las Vegas (of all places!). Joni and I wondered privately whether we would ever be able to make as close friendships or develop a relationship as strong with our Congregation and community. The out pouring of love at services when we celebrated together was reaffirmation of our feelings when over 700 people came to wish me well. With video pull down screens in full force, I received video greetings from Marla Letizia "from Croatia" and"the people of Croatia"! Jerry Gordon prepared a special greeting (and roasting) from Washington D.C., and Steve Lewis, the man behind our"virtual rabbi" project showed a blooper reel of my out takes! Christy Molasky sang a beautiful song that brought joyful tears to my eyes. The oneg was beautiful and I am thankful to everyone who contributed to make it so nice. The Schymans, for the centerpieces; Roberta Unger, Philip Goldstein, Karen Levine and all the office staff worked hard to show their love and it is very much appreciated. My wife Joni out did herself in organizing and spear heading this grand celebration. I am indeed a lucky man. But the highlight of the evening for me was when my daughter CJ. spoke. Just a baby of a year when we came, she has grown up to become a beautiful young lady. Her words of wit and wisdom delivered with such poise made me a very proud father. When all is said and done, and the years pass by, we all become reflective of our accomplishments, our regrets and our joys. When we see our children grow up and become something special -well, what could be a better gift than that? So cherish the moments, they do go by too fast. Cherish the moments of sadness and joy. Intermingled with life's ^every; everyday, they are the stuff of which lives are made. Cherish the moments, and let them give us pause. A moment of reflection, to give thanks. To give thanks to God. Rabbi Akselrad President from page 2 We never know how we touch each others lives. One word, one sentence, one quiet, humble gesture like Todd's touch each other in a way that can change the whole path of one's life. life. I have been always blessed with so many amazing successes in my life through hard work and just the fact that Miave been in Las Vegas all of my life is one amazing blessing to begin with. There are so many to thank for this credible experience. And, when I drill down, and peel off the layers of the onion skin, I come to the core moment of when this rewarding path began for me. It was a single moment, maybe 12 years ago or more and Todd Marshall's selfless personal expression. Life changing for me and oh so very wonderful!!! Thank you so very much to all those who helped make my 50th birthday a special one. The celebration, cards and gifts all touched my heart. In addition, Joni and I are so very grateful to all who sent good wishes as we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary l We are so grateful to all those who expressed their love and friendship. This way, they hear from me what our various activities and programs are, so that I can "help them to maximize their temple-going experience". During this discussion, I also cover all financial obligations, starting with the printed page on Membership. I'd like to discuss 2 specific aspects of that discussion with you today - Funding for CNT and Dues Relief for those who require financial assistance. We have some wonderful congregants who do not pay the "usual, normal" level of Annual Commitments (previously known as "Dues", but we're not a county club or health club so we've changed the name), and I want to recognize them and thank them, but not by name. We have Menorah Level Donors who pay an annual amount higher than the usual Annual Commitment, and each level comes with additional benefits. You can see the various levels and benefits on page 10, for your review. All levels start by receiving a glass Menorah and glass candle, and each year, we have a dessert reception at the President of the Temple's home, when we discuss what's been happening, what is going to happen, and just a general"sharing"with Rabbi, Philip, myself, other senior staff members and Board members. If you would like to sit and discuss increasing your Annual Commitment level, please feel free to contact me and we'll sit and talk. Whether you'd like to start for the first time, or increase from your existing level-THANK YOU for your financial support and assistance. We also have a category "Sustaining Members", which is for those seniors 70 or above who continue paying the usual, normal dues level, and not going to the "Senior" rate part of the Annual Commitment section. This leads me directly to the next paragraph, as the two topics are closely related. We have a policy, "we don't want finances to stop anyone from joining CNT". Again, when a potential member comes into my office, we discuss finances on a confidential basis, and with the assistance of those Menorah Level donors, we can allow anyone to join CNT, and the funds that are raised by the Menorah Level donors helps us to balance our budget when some families cannot pay the "usual, normal" amount. These are confidential conversations held in my office, and for the past few years, we have sent out a form to those who are asking for financial assistance. It's a very general form, and we send it out on an annual basis, as we all know that people's circumstances can change drastically year by year. So, ^King that into account, we send out the form so that people who once again need assistance write down some basic information and we then proceed based on what they can contribute. I share this with everyone so that you are aware of our financial policy. We have been most fortunate to have had over 125 new families join us since January 1 this year, and not everyone is aware of the mailing we do for those who are receiving financial assistance from the temple. If you are one of those people, please fill out the form (scheduled to be mailed in late October) and return it to me. As always, it is confidential. If you are one of our Menorah Level Donors or Sustaining Members, thank you, and if you'd like to increase your level by one step, that would assist us even further as we continue our policy of "we don't want finances to stop anyone from joining CNT". If you are currently paying the normal Annual Commitment, I ask that you consider going up to the first level of Menorah Level Donor - it would be a mitzvah that will allow us to continue serving the entire Jewish community with our programs and activities, especially our wonderful CNT congregants. Thankyou fortaking thetimeto read this and for your consideration. New building, new programs, newexperiences- JOIN US, and THANK YOU! To be continued.... Irv SCHMOOZE WITH THE RABBI Sunday, November 18 ~ 9:30 am Rooking for a forum to askall the questions you didn't get answered in Religious School? Then Schmooze ?With the Rabbi is your opportunity to sit down and talk with the Rabbi in a casual setting. November 2007 5 Dir. of Early Childhood Education Lonnie Kritzler It's hard to believe that 10 weeks of school are now behind us. Time has sped by, yet it feels like we have been a school family forever. The children are doing so well. Their laughtB and joy is contagious. It is a pleasure coming to work each day. The month of November promises to be a busy one! We have School Picture Day scheduled. This may not sound like much, but just imagine getting 12 children at a time, under the age of 5, try to sit and smile all at the same moment. We can hardly wait to see (and share) the finished results. Autumn and Thanksgiving are the thematic topics for this month. The school is decorated with fall leaves, pumpkins, and corn stalks. Children are learning about estimation and presumptions. For example, how many seeds do they think are in a pumpkin? What color do they think a pumpkin is inside? Why do they think leaves change color? The children are also learning the "user-friendly" Thanksgiving story. They will gain a better understanding of pilgrims and learn a lot about our Native Americans. As you can see, we are very busy and loving every minute of it. If you would like to see the school in action, please give me a call at 632-2250 or e-mail me at Ikritzlenalvnertamid.org. I would love to take you around. Director of Lifelong Learning Craig Rosen For all of you who missed Noah Shabbat, I can only say that it was a night to remember. With so many children and adults dressing up as their favorite ani?mal, Congregation NerTamid had their very own zoo. Of course the live animals were also a treat and Noah himself (Rabbi Akselrad in disguise) told his story. November is a time to give thanks! The word Thank You in Hebrew is Todah. As a family, I challenge you to take time out this month and discuss the many things that we are thankful for. As Jews, we are most certainly thankful for the opportunity to perform mitzvot to make the world a better place. As a follow up to our wonderful Mitzvah Day, perhaps you and your families may want to perform additional mitzvot.
