SPECIAL ACTION ITEM: A vote will be taken to break the tie for the College of Urban Affairs seat. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: each candidate will be allowed no more than 3 minutes to speak, followed by question and answer, followed by discussion, followed by roll call vote. CANDIDATE BYRGE speaks 1 CANDIDATE PIRO speaks SENATOR KARA DONNELLY: have you read the constitution and bylaws? CANDIDATE PIRO: no CANDIDATE BYRGE: yes SENATOR JIMENEZ: you said studentss don't know about CSUN. What are your plans? CANDIDATE PIRO: go to classrooms and let my constituency know that this is who I am, this is what I'm doing for you. At least twice a week. CANDIDATE BYRGE: that would be my goal, to get people involved. I was thinking I'd wear my senator badge around school. SENATOR JIMENEZ: how often would you wear your nametag? CANDIDATE BYRGE: all the time SENATOR KRISTA DONNELLY: you'd have to come to meetings on Monday nights, and meetings.. .do you both work? Do you have time to do this? CANDIDATE BYRGE: I'll make the time to do it. CANDIDATE PIRO: I'll make the time. SENATOR BOWERS: you mentioned about awareness. Do you want to raise awareness for yourselves, CSUN, if you are not elected, do you still want to be involved? Do you need the position to raise awareness? CANDIDATE BYRGE: no. It's not the position. CANDIDATE PIRO: I'm not afraid to present to Zarina or Loren. SENATOR BOWERS: during campaigning, what did you do? CANDIDATE BYRGE: I put the website on my campaign flyers because you don't see urban affairs students all the time. My whole focus was to get people to vote because our campus is a little apathetic sometimes. CANDIDATE PIRO: she hit the nail on the head. I went to classrooms and talked to students. The only thing I could say differently, I thought the computer thing was a tough thing. When you walk people to the polls and the computers are down... 2 SENATOR BOWERS: have you voted in the presidential election? CANDIDATE BYRGE and CANDIDATE PIRO: Yes. SENATOR MACK: what do you plan to do if you're elected for your department? CANDIDATE BYRGE: not sure yet. I want to get my feet wet first. My main goal is to raise awareness. I'm going to meetings and I went to the retreat, I learned more about boundaries. The main job is to represent your college. I want to add a fresh mind to the senate. CANDIDATE PIRO: I'm a little older. I hate seeing people selling shoes who have college degrees. I want to get more internships for our college. I want to bring our constituency base... PRESIDENT SCHUCK: why do you think CSUN is an important organization? CANDIDATE BYRGE: because, being involved in any kind of government. It's good to be involved. It's good to know what's going on. It's good that you get involved so you can help out. I'd love to serve students and be a part of the process of making the campus a better, more exciting atmosphere. CANDIDATE PIRO: every one pays tuition. I think it's important that we have a say in where that money goes. SENATOR FLORES: what would be your personal gain out of this? CANDIDATE BYRGE: to know that I could possibly make a difference in someone's college life. The most exciting thing to me is when someone comes to me and says that maybe I should change something or I enjoyed that. Knowing that I could help and be a go between. CANDIDATE PIRO: helping others. I feel that for the last year our college had been overlooked. We're the fastest growing college at this university. This is a growing filed... SENATOR MULLINAX: I commend you for being up there. You said you were in student government in high school? In other avenues that you've held leadership positions, ...? CANDIDATE BYRGE: have coached sports teams. Exciting because you're shaping mental and physical. A lot of things with my church. CANDIDATE PIRO: coming where I am from and where I'm at now, I joined the army and I became a sargeant before I was 21 years old. I joined Delta Chi. The philanthropy chair I hold in my fraternity now is the most exciting position I've held. 3 SENATOR WASHINGTON: what's the number 1 reason you want to run? CANDIDATE BYRGE: to be involved. I love to take action. I don't like to sit back and watch. I like to make things happen. CANDIDATE PIRO: this is not a resume builder. I feel that the urban affairs college was so grossly misrepresented. To me that's my most important focus. SENATOR DEARMAS: commend you both. SENATOR MULLINAX: I'm in an organization with CANDIDATE PIRO and there's not a person that I've met in college that I respect more as far as someone representing themselves and being so organized. He has like a 3.98 org and is in a social fraternity. He gets people to do things that they never would've thought of doing. I have the utmost respect for him. SENATOR JIMENEZ: you're both very qualified for this. At the start of this session, it f eels like I'm making a very difficult decision here. Not as difficult as tomorrow's, but difficult. I've heard good things about you. Good luck to you both. SENATOR WASHINGTON: glad to have met both of you. My main priority is having someone represent every voice. I'm glad that someone came and talked to me. There are than one kind of person in urban affairs. SENATOR BOWERS: if I'm not mistaken, what year are you, CANDIDATE BYRGE? CANDIDATE BYRGE: sophomore SENATOR BOWERS: impressed with speech and resume SENATOR JIMENEZ: we're going to make a decision to vote on a senator who is not directly affecting me. SENATOR WASHINGTON, I'd like to have a little bit more... SENATOR WASHINGTON: I don't think it'd be appropriate to say right now. Roll call vote: SENATOR MULLINAX: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR KRISTA DONNELLY: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR JIMENEZ: pass SENATOR HUERTA: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR BOWERS: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR MACK: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR TEMPLETON: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR DEARMAS: CANDIDATE PIRO 4 SENATOR KARA DONNELLY: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR DALY SORVONGSAVANH: pass SENATOR COCHRAN: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR GABRIEL: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR GONZALES: pass SENATOR JOHNS: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR ROTH: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR MARAZITA: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR FLORES: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR MOSES: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR WONG: CANDIDATE BYRGE SENATOR WASHINGTON: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR JIMENEZ: CANDIDATE PIRO SENATOR DALY SORVONGSAVANH: abstain SENATOR GONZALES: CANDIDATE BYRGE 7-12-1 CANDIDATE PIRO receives the seat. We've been sending ads for the plasma screen and, do we send them to you directly? DIRECTOR BOURDET: yes. ii. Residence Hall Association DAYSON: Ashley's in the hospital. She's sick. We had a blood drive today. We had about 30 people show up. 18 actually donated. We beat the record for last year. SENATOR BOWERS: I like seeing you in the tie better than the hat. SENATOF JOHNS: what's goihng on with that RHA TV? DAYSON: if you want to put an advertisement on it, you can e-mail him. SENATOR MACK: you did a great job, boo bash, all the kids seemed to love it. DIRECTOR MADRIGAL: my organization participated and it was such a great thing. I definitely would like to see that expanded. DAYSON: we got a lot of people involved. It was really good this year. I saw some of the senators representing their organizations. iii. Student Athletics iv. Student Health Advisory Committee v. ROTC vi. Leadership Advisory Board SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: meets on Thursday nights at 6:30 and lasts about one hour. We need a CSUN representative that can do this until May. They'd need to go to meetings and would be approving funding.. .you can apply to offset the costs through leadership advisory board. F. Rebel Yell Report X. EXECUTIVE BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: I'm in charge of all the directors. VICE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE ANDERSON is the intermediary supervisor. I'm in charge of doing evaluations and you'll get two months worth. Also in charge of CSUN code of conduct. Next e-board meeting, Thursday at 7. We're in the process of looking for an elections board director. We'll try to appoint by last meeting of this semester. 8 SENATOR FLORES: how do you advertise for the position? VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: O.S.I, page, plasmas. O.S.I, page is in the Rebel Yell. We fund the Rebel Yell. We give them 8.7% of what we get from our 5% so we get an O.S.I, page. PRESIDENT SCHUCK: welcome, I think you guys are here at a very exciting time. 6 month progress report: when the E-board was elected in the spring, CSUN didn't really have an identity. Since then we've created a new logo. We have a new slogan:"Your campus connection." Everything's been given a professional look and feel. When we came in there were silly email addresses like unlvsenateprez..., since then each CSUN member has been given an e-mail address at unlvcsun.com. We've turned the CBC annex into a marketing and graphic arts center where the marketing and publications directors are. We've changed directors' workrooms. We got donated computers. We have the best computer lab on campus. We planned, bought and are ready to implement a new shuttle program by spring semester. The quote was that we've been waiting for at least four years for this to happen and there just hasn't been anyone willing to do it..." VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ and I met with two county commissions and got a crosswalk approved for the north side of campus. The website now gets updated on a daily basis. I wouldn't be surprised if we have one of the best websites for student governments. ASGA keeps taking about Berkeley's. I think ours' is better. SENATOR PIRO talked about how people don't know who our senators are. Now we have the plasma screens. 60 percent of students said they come through the MSU at least once a week. On-line elections, we're creating new things. Anytime you bring new technology to anything, you can expect problems. On-line elections is something almost every university around the country has. Rebel Nation is a new student organization that's going to mimic the .. .rebel nation had a hundred members at its first meeting. It's going to be a new student section at every game. We have a new relationship with campus departments. We meet with athletics on almost a weekly basis. O.I.T. was the first batter up when we asked for new computers. R.H.A., we meet with Ashley all the time. S.I.A., although we're still working on creating a better relationship with them, it's better. Sports marketing. The administration chipped in 30k for the shuttle program. Public Safety is running the shuttle program. The bookstore donates stuff all the time. The textobook cost battle. We presented to the Board of Regents and Faculty Senate. It was in the Review Journal, in on-line publications. We redefined positions in CSUN. NSA has bigger names, bigger lectures. 250 people were at the Robert F. Kennedy lecture. We had 5000 at a NSA lecture a week later. It's taken on its own identity this year. The newly created marketing position, the ads are more than professional. We redefined rebel ruckus from 400 to 3100 students. When we budgeted for O.S.I., not one penny was spent on technology. The budget's gone because it's clearly a new position. We restructured our receptionists hiring and have saved..., have had more sponsorships than we've ever seen. We have new relationship with the Rebel Yell. O.I.T. did the pop ups for us during elections. We talked so much about this campus being apathetic. Our numbers for elections are exactly even with the national average. We gave away 250 extra tickets for the UNLV-UNR football game. 9 Although there's this idea that we're in an apathetic campus, it's changing. We're on the verge of.. .1 don't think it's something that's as accurate as it's been before. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: thankful that PRESIDENT SCHUCK has been that driving force behind all of this. I know SENATOR JIMENEZ talked about his vision about getting all the senators out there... PRESIDENT SCHUCK: even though as an e-board with the directors with all these things, for the most part we have not done it with the help of the Senate. There haven't been a lot of senators who have stepped up to bat. I really hope with this new Senate, that will change. We've done things with the approval of the senate, but not with their help. There's so much more that we can get done with all of your help. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: I hope you understand that we're working to build a better relationship with S.I.A. Rebelcious wasn't attended as well as last year, and hopefully it is better next year. Two sciences and one nursing. Make sure you let your classes know. Applications are due Friday at 5. XI. PUBLIC COMMENT Public comment will be taken during this agenda item. No action may be taken on a matter raised under this item until the matter is included on an agenda as an item on which action may be taken. The Chairman may place reasonable limitations as to the amount of time individuals may address the Senate. The Chairman may elect to allow public comment on a specific agenda item when that agenda item is being considered. CHRIS GUCCI: Sophomore chemistry major and am interested in the science seat. SENATOR HUERTA: anyone whose not busy on Friday.. .engineering society will be participating in a highschool program to try an get more highschool students interested... SENATOR TEMPLETON: youth and resources is looking for people to get involved in community outreach. Every Thursday at 6pm. SENATOR HUERTA: Tuesday November 9th, MEChA's having another Chicano poetry night. We will be in the alcove from about 7 until whenever the M.S.U. closes. Open forum for people to come out. It's open to anyone who wants to come out and express themselves. DIRECTOR BOURDET: something I wanted to do with Vagus Nerve was poetry nights... SENATOR WASHINGTON: we're having our first annual Alpha Phi Alpha Black and Gold Ball next Friday. 15 or 2 for 20. Look nice. 10 SENATOR MACK: college republicans are having a victory party for Bush tomorrow at Caesar's. SENATOR JOHNS: democrats are having a victory party... XII. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The following minutes are submitted for approval: 34-37 SENATOR KARA DONNELLY: move to approve SENATOR DEARMAS 2nds SENATOR FLORES: where are the minutes? SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: they're upstairs. SENATOR HUERTA opposes SENATOR WASHINGTON and SENATOR FLORES abstain 18-1-2 minutes from 34-37 are APPROVED XIII. NEW BUSINESS A. Action Item: Nomination/Selectoin of one (1) Senator to serve as the Senate President Pro Tempore for the 35t h session. As submitted by Senate President Amesquita. SENATOR BOWERS: move to combine and postpone action items A-I. SENATOR MACK 2nds SENATOR KRISTA DONNELLY: I think I understand why SENATOR BOWERS.. .wanted to wait for I, there are at least 3 interested in the SENATE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMP position. If not elected, they'd probably like to be a chairs. SENATOR MULLINAX: is there anything saying you can't be a chair and a senate president pro-temp? The only reason we should table is because there's a senator not here who'd like to be a chair. SENATOR BOWERS: do you know which one he was interested in? 11 SENATOR KRISTA DONNELLY: Constitution. I don't think it's fair to vote on a position that a senator's interested in who is generally always here and is wholeheartedly... SENATOR FLORES: I'd like to have a chance to go over the bylaws before... SENATOR MACK: all these positions are pretty important and I'm curious whether new senators know what they are or know what they consist of... SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: we did that at the retreat that you didn't go to. SENATOR MULLINAX: I'm a little confused as to why you want to wait. I think it'd be in pretty poor taste to elect a new senator to a chair position or the senate president pro-temp position. SENATOR BOWERS: the pro-temp has to be postponed anyway. I thought all the senators would have a chance to look into the positions for next week. SENATOR JIMENEZ: want to point out that I don't really care right now, when it comes to actually knowing what committee you want to be in, you still have a week to submit your name and... SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: to clarify that, the only person who can submit names for committees is the chair person. Unless it's submitted 30 minutes after meeting, it won't be on there. Same for next week. SENATOR JIMENEZ: 30 minutes, that also gives you a week, a head start on 3 senators who are not here. SENATOR HUERTA opposes 20-1-0 items are combined and postponed until 35-02 B. SENATOR BOWERS changes motion to: j,k,l,m and p. SENATOR JOHNS 2nds SENATOR MULLINAX: all we're doing is combining all like items. It takes a lot less time and the directors do a really good job with where the money goes to. SENATOR BOWERS: most of the money we're approving are for events that have already happened. 13 SENATOR FLORES: can we get the list of the budgets that we have? SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: we can put the budget online. DIRECTOR BOURDET: Peter was supposed to send me a copy. I'd like to have no more than one senator from each college. Six open spots. 15 VICE PRESIDENT GOATZ: first meeting for you guys. Hope you learned a lot. I encourage you guys to start thinking about what committee you want to sit on. Also, I believe your senate rules have to be on in three more weeks. Look in the past for what they've done so you can come in with your own ideas. SENATE PRESIDENT AMES QUIT A: we pushed it back a week. There's a time limit. Slide plates, I need to get on the same page of VICE PRESIDENT PRO-TEMPORE ANDERSON for that. With the exception of SENATOR WASHINGTON, were there any problem? SENATOR SORVONGSAVANH: everything. SENATOR MULLINAX: mine's gone. I think someone stole it for souvenir. SENATOR PIRO needs one. SENATE PRESIDENT AMESQUITA: if the phone number's not right, please correct it, also the e-mail address.
