HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS GROUP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA 3321 Uribe St 89129 June 24, 2011 The Honorable Harry Reid Majority Leader, U.S. Senate 522 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Fax: (702) 388-5030 and 202 224-7327 Dear Senator Reid: You have always been a great friend of the Holocaust survivor community. We are writing you today because of a matter of utmost urgency to Holocaust survivors and our families in Nevada and the United States. Since 2007, when Tom Lantos introduced HR 1746 with Congresswoman Ueana Ros-Lehtinen, an impressive, bi-partisan group of Congress people have tried to enact legislation to restore Holocaust survivors' rights to obtain justice from insurance companies like Allianz, Generali, AXA, and others who dishonored billions of dollars of insurance policies they sold to Jewish families before the Holocaust. The survivor community has been devastated by Congress's failure to act to support our human and constitutional rights. There is no reason survivors should be second class citizens here in the United States of America in the year 2011. As the New York Times just reported, there is new momentum for this legislation, with strong support in the House and a bi-partisan Phono: 101256.9277 Fuc WtiSSjnTt Pfcao: air fat jMBtauytgcrauttt HOLOCAUST! SURVIVORS GROUP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA 3321 UribeSt to Vegas, NV 89129 ' V the Senate, S. 466. We want to be very clear: We expect you to co-sponsor this bill, and use your unique platform as Senate Majority Leader to recruit others to co-sponsor it as well. We don't have a lot of time for discussion - we need action. The denial of our rights is bad enough, but with almost 50% of all survivors in the United States living below or near poverty - even in Las Vegas - the situation is completely unacceptable. The courts should be open to survivors and heirs to learn the truth and recover what is owed. We see you are a co-sponsor of the bill to allow survivors to sue the French Railroad. Why not allow survivors to go to court to recover broken contracts issued by global insurance companies that do business all over the United States and who denied survivors our family legacies? We would like to be able to inform our members and their families that you have committed to help the Holocaust survivors by co-sponsoring S. 466. Can we count on you?
