Dancing is a key ingredient in Spven Brjdt for Seven Brothers i ixakhg^ssOhhc Light Opera MAY 13,1982 FAG642 opened their 45fri season with the Broadway-bound Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Thank God for the, extremely talented troupe of dancers and the spirited choreography of Jerry Jackson. The three big dance numbers are well worth waiting for, the bodes,... the Hrnthars and the townfolk are-damn fine dancers. If onty the rest of_ the show their energy. The book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay is a string of hayseed Jokes and male chauvinist platitudes. The songs, the original ones from the Afro by Johnny Jiercer and Gene dePaul, and especially tie new ones by AI Kasha and ; Joel Hirschhom are immediately forgettable. Lawrence Kasha's direction manages to keep the action moving. pebbyBoone does weM as MHlie, her Invoice reaching the farthest comers of the Pavilion. David-James Carroll is appropriated macho as Adam and has A deep, ricm voice. Craig Peralta and Itancy Fox stand out as the lead dancers. ?√ß (Dorolfty Chandler Pavilion, Music banter In Los Angles. Mon. - Sat until lame 18.880-4411). SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS The opening offering of the 45th Civic Light Opera season is a silty little* musical about a spunky young woman who turns seven real 1 men into quiche eaters. Debbie Boone portrays the young woman and, fortunately, she exudes pleasantness and ^ings well, and while she ?╜ disappears offstage when the serious dancing starts, she acquits herself well in the steps she's been given. Jerry Jackson's choreography^and musical staging is splendid and his dance numbers, particularly the two big production numbers, help overcome eminently forgettable old songs by Gene de Paul and Johnny Mercer gnd some bland new songs bv Al Kasha and jool Hirschhom. The show's other strength is the ensemble. They sing, dance and prance ? around in Robert Fletcher's flouncy.costumes, generally having such a good time that it is hard to" resist their ihfectious energy. Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave.; Mon.-Sat., 8:30 p.m.; matinees Wed. 8- Sat., 2 p.m. Closes June 19. Call 460-4411. ?╟÷Anne Haskins
