5-19-55 P.9 and Maria bet again and again-- again and again they lose. One by one, their followers drift away, until finally they are alone* The dinner party is dismal* Oh, Chuck and Maria assure each other that this doesn't make any difference - they still love each other* But the enchahtment is gone - they are back in a world of reality. Now Pierre has his chance. He speaks to Maria gently, regretfully, of how important it is for a ballerina to focus com- pletely on her Work -- how difficult it would be to be married to a man who didn't understand that work, didn't fit in with her professional life. Chuck doesn't need anyone to work on him - his own common sense is enough* What, actually, do they really have in common - he and Maria? By the night of Maria's opening, they are finished, these two* Unhappy about it - still in love - but finished. Chuck goes to the opening with the feeling that this is goodbye. But as he watches her dance, he can't stand it, And as she finishes dancing, and listens to the applause, she knows that it is no longer enough. They rush to each other. The magic that brought them together is like a fairy godmother. And that's what a fairy godmother is supposed to do - bring people together. She's not supposed to hang around holding their hands for the rest of their lives - where they go from there is up to them. Magic or no magic, they're going to do just what they planned} Maria tells Chuck, Six months on the ranch, six months of ballet. But one thing is certain - he's never going to gamble again as long as he livesi If he does, it's a sure thing that he'll lose, Be- cause finding each other and falling in love is all the luck they're entitled to^ is enough for one lifetime - who has a right to expect anything else? And from this we go into our finale, END
