Jewish Family Service Agency Housing Options for Seniors Title XX Grant Presentation April 1993 The HOS program, with its HomeSharing component, addresses 3 of the 5 national goals Maintaining economic self-support to prevent or reduce/eliminate dependence: the HomeSharing program placed 32 seniors eligible for subsidized housing into a homeshare match, creating affordable housing for seekers and extra income for providers. Achieve self-sufficiency and preventing dependence: A total of 12 seniors received Assisted Living from our HomeSharing match, and 16 seniors received free room and board because they were able to barter their skills and services in place of using up their limited income for rent. And for those who didn?t want to share a home, we were able to refer them to an affordable apartment, provide them information on rebates they?re eligible for such as the property tax rebates or ways to reduce their expenses through weatherization programs. Reduce inappropriate institutional care: JFSA informs seniors of the homemaker/home health aide programs that are available to keep them independent in their own homes, explaining how the subsidized programs work or how to contact private agencies that take their supplemental health insurances. Approximately 40% of our HomeShare matches provide Assisted Living to the seniors who don?t qualify for the subsidized programs but may not have the insurance to pay for the private services.
