There's something about the atmosphere of a well-tended and well- groomed resort hotel that puts us in a holiday mood immediately. After unpacking, we spent a few hours wandering around the hotel, enjoying the poolside an- tics for a while, then going on into the rumpus room with peo- ple in clusters?╟÷always in clus- ters; there?╟╓s never any need to be alone here?╟÷around tables with cards or spinning balls or danc- ing cubes, and then it was time for the dinner show. You?╟╓d have to be an armadillo not to know that Las Vegas is the top entertainment show place of the world: more money is spent on music and costumes and floor shows and stars along the Strip than in New York and Paris night spots all together. We fig- ured that if we could take it, in a three-day visit we could see eight floor shows?╟÷the dinner show, the supper show and the late show. The shows change constantly, biit the first night we were there we saw?╟÷awj^fi^rd^V-Frank Sin- atra at the Sands?╟╓dinner show; then we spent-^me time at the casino, and just before midnight we marched a couple of thou- sand yards down the Strip to the Sahara (the names are about all there is of the desert on the Strip) to see Donald .O?╟╓Connor and the midnight sl^^fe,After that, we stayed in the lounge for a few drinks and a few games, and the music of Louis Prima and Keely Smith kept us there until dawn. The next night we went to the Riviera for the dinner show at which Harry Belafonte did his usual mesmerizing; at midnight we were at the Tropicana for the Eddie Fisher show; and on to the Dunes for the 2:30 Minsky show. The third night we had din- ner reservations at the Flamingo, where Pearl Bailey was the ex- citing star; then up to the Thun- derbird for an exciting Oriental revue, a Far East importation; and on to the Silver Slipper for the late show with Hank Hen?╟÷ ry and Sparky Kaye, two fine comics. In between we trekked around to the lounges: we caught Lionel Hampton and his band at the Riviera; at the Flamingo we lis- tened to the Harry James Orches- tra; then back to the Sands; where we couldn?╟╓t get enough of the songs of the great Ella Fitz- gerald. We had to pass up other great shows; at the Stardust, at the El Rancho, at the Desert Inn, ?╟÷oh, well, we only planned three days; next time we?╟╓ll mM?·e it longer.
