Obey Ranking Member Committee on Appropriations 1016 Longworth House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515-0001 Dear Congressman Obey, I am writing to request your support for the inclusion of $3 million in the FY2002 Commerce, Justice and State Departments Appropriations Bill for the Las Vegas Police Department's (LVMPD) Metro Automated Identification Network (MAIN) system. LVMPD has designed MAIN to be the Department's central Automated Fingerprint Identification System The Metro Automated Identification Network (MAIN) system will have the capability to tie together a county-wide network of new and existing workstations which will be set up to support the positive identification needs of the LVMPD. The first phase of the MAIN program will be fully automated to serve the primary LVMPD identification services including criminal booking and positive identification, applicant background checks and ID documentation production, and criminal investigations using latent fingerprints and mugshots. Funding for this program is essential to law enforcement's needs, as southern Nevada has the fastest-growing population in the country. Without this system, LVMPD will not be able to deliver the improved on-the-street law enforcement capability necessary to control crime in an urban area topping 1.25 million people. I strongly support the funding of this crucial program for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Thank you for your time and consideration. (AFIS). Sincerely, SHELLEY BERKLEY Member of Congress PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
