The Sportsmen*s World Awards are conferred on athletes who?½ championship performances have stood the test of time, and whose exemplary personal conduct have made them outstanding inspirations for the youth of today. W, R. (Bill) Schroeder, director of the Helms Athletic Foundation, and chairman of the National Selections Committee of leading sports writers and sportscasters whose ballots chose the honorees, announced the first two Hall of Famers to be so honored this year: An almost unanimous choice among the more than one hundred members of the Selections Committee, in the baseball category was Stan "The Man" Musial, while in football, the honoree is to be Marshall Goldberg, a two-time All America at the University of Pittsburgh, and later a standout performer for the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL. Musial, three times the National League?╟╓s Most Valuable Player (1943-46-48), played 22 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (1941-1963 )3 with time out for military service in 1945. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N. Y., and the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in Los Angeles. Overall, Musial holds five major league records, has tied seven others, holds eleven National League marks and shares three more. -more-r
