Cahlan Sunshine Mike Cole Transportation President's Message lit Fellow Las Vegans: I wish to thank the many people who visited the Chamber of Commerce during Open House which officially started "Operation Greater Las Vegas." As J explained previously "Operation G-L-V" is designed to acquaint both members and non-members of the Chamber with our organization and how we are working to create a bigger and better community. I would like to point out, however, that we can only help you as long as you actively participate in the Chamber and your community. We must all work together as a team. Although our official Open House ended last week, the Chamber offices are always open. I want to personally invite everyone to drop by and see our operation. We are proud of it and I know you will be too, once you see what the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is doing for Southern Nevada. Henry Bridgman, chairman of the committee, has written letters to U. S. Senators Alan Bible and George W. AAalone, Governor Charles H. Russell, Congressman Walter S. Baring, Huston Mills, State Highway Department, and U. S. Senator Albert Gore, Chairman of the Highway Committee of the upper house. Bridgman said in his letter he had been informed by citizens and business people in both Arizona and California, "They resent the tourists coming into southern Nevada to spend their money, then returning home with limited funds to spend. This is where the pressure and resentment arises against the connection of their highway program with that of Nevada." The letters asked if it will take Congressional action to force adjoining states to start construction at state lines when neighboring states are working toward completion of their interstate highways. In his letter Bridgman also wanted to know whether the Bureau of Public Roads has any authority to force such isues and whether the Federal Interstate Highway Authority has any right to hold up funds if such states are delaying completion of the freeway. Bridgman called attention to the fact that in southern Nevada are located such vital defense installations as the AEC test site, Hoover Dam, Ammunition depots and Marine, Air Force and Navy bases which should require good, fast highways for service and possible evacuation.
