FREEMAN COMPANY pub/icists - k In the stiff competition of Las Vegas, this in itself was almost a miracle, getting Prank Sinatra ?╟÷ Danny Thomas ?╟÷ Billy Eckstine ?╜* Vic Damone ?╟÷ Jiway McHugh ?╟≤?╟≤ Billy Gray ?╟÷ Patty Moore and Ben Lossy, to each perform one night of the celebration. Danny Thomas was signed by Jack Entratter to open the Sands in December 1952 ?╟÷ but also Invited to attend were stars like Jimmy Durante, the Rita Brothers, Jane Powell, Ray Anthony, Frankly Laine, Denise Dajrcel, Brsula Theirs, Terjry Moore V&& ^ fMilton Berl#*s/only nightclub engagement in ^3^ the past 10 years was for Entratter at the Sands, and he works there annually for 3 weeks, bringing In Ms entire TV show, often rehearsing new techniques for his fall TV programs right on the Sands stage. The booking scoop of the year fell to Entratter*s planning and ability when he signed Desl Amaz and Lucille Ball and their entire TV program, "I Love Lucy?╟Ñ, for a KIGHTCLUB ENGAGEMENT at the Sands In 1957* Mr* Entratter is responsible for the fame of the CopaGlrl, just as Ziegfeld popularized the RZiegfeld Girl* ?╟÷ and has sent more than 75 girls on to Hollywood for contracts and screen work. Such stars as June Allyson, Lucille Bremer, Olga San Juan and May Wynn were started by Entratter as CopaGirls and given their chance for Hollywood through his contacts. Along with his unique billings, Jack has alchemized the Sands Hotel into an enchanted desert citadel of the opulence of the fabled Castle of Oz. In the money cage he can hustle up f500,000 cash at any hour day or night, and the flow of tourist gold at the grnalng tables has been so profuse that the hotel*s entire cost ?╟÷ 15,500,000 was virtually paid off six months after the doors were opened. The Casino cocktail waitresses drive Cadillacs and earn flj.00 and f$00 a week, and an obscure handyman, whose part-time job is washing dirty plastic playing cards, makes #60 a week. Hotel guests are transported to and from their rooms in electric trams; the main bar is 108 feet long and will accommodate 520 tipplers at one standing. In such an atmosphere of profligacy, money tends to have ephemeral or exaggerated values, and Jack admits that it produces some curious results. Last spring, as a case in point, old friends Joe E. Lewis and Ted Fio Rlto met in a casino and Ted asked Joe to lend him #600. The comedian gave the band leader one - more - 9508 W I l SHI R E BlVD. ?╟≤ BEVERLY HILLS, CAL/ ?╟≤ BRADSHAW 2-861 1 /
