A Rabbi'/ Acr/a^c ?Diaspora Voices Heard in Israel? Having returned recently from the Central Conference of American Rabbis convention in Miami, I thought it important to bring you an update on what has been a gut wrenching and divisive situation regarding Diaspora Jewry and Israel. From past articles and sermons as well as newspaper reports, l think most of us are now aware that over the past few lonths there has been discussion in the Israeli Parliament %0L Nl 1997 Our goal for this year ... to raise $100,000. As your Kol Nidre Appeal Chairman for 1997, I can?t do it without your help . . . together, we can achieve anything. The funds raised during Kol Nidre gives us the ability to service you, tne members, With what you expect, what you need, and more. When you soon receive your pledge card in the mail, please don?t discard it as another pitch for money . . . think about it first, then decide. Congregation Ner Tamid is your Temple. Financially it needs our support. I ask you to reach deep into your pockets and your hearts and s?ive what vou can. Together we can do it.. We can reach our goal! Michael A. This is some?thing that we can not tolerate on any level. For those of us who love Israel can never give up our own religious freedom for the sake of a small minority in Israel. As a result of this controversy, Diaspora Jews, including members of our own community and Congre?gation have raised our voices in no uncertain terms. Leaders of the Reform and Conservative move?ments made a historic visit to Israel to meet with Prime Minister Netan?yahu. With a now sympathetic ear, and help from other members of the parliament (particularly Natan Sha?ransky) it was agreed that a special committee would be created to study the issue which would for the first time have representation by members of the Reform and Conser?vative movements. This in itself is a major victory. In the short term, therefore, the bill has been stopped in the parliament. This is not to say that it can not rear its ugly head once again. But for the time being we can acknowledge the fact that our voices have been heard loud and clear. Those of you who have participated in the registration for the upcoming World Zionist Organization elections now have something else that you need to do?VOTE! vote for ARZA- ? ------------------------------------- ARZA is the Zionist organization which represents the reform move?ments interests. Voting should take place in upcoming weeks so please do not miss this opportunity to let your voices be heard in powerful way. ESSAGE FROM OUR TEMPLE PRESIDENT There is only one word that comes to mind when I think about the past year at Congregation Ner Tamid. That word is GROWTH. It isn?t surprising that growth has become the number one issue facing the Las Vegas Valley. For our Congregation, as with the valley as a whole, there are benefits to growth and difficulties created by the pace of growth. As a city Planning Commissioner, 1 face the problems of growth with every new home, shopping center, or other project my board reviews. As President of our Temple, I am keenly aware of the burdens placed upon our Rabbi, Cantorial Soloist, Religious School Principal, office staff, and janitorial staff. In addition, our Board of Trustees has taken on an ever increasing role and our many volunteers are asked to do more and more each day. Every time I see our Sisterhood?s ?Party Shop? volunteers working in our kitchen I wonder how we get them to come back and do it again. The benefits of our growth can and will be achieved only through proper planning and implementation of several new projects currently under way through the efforts of our Board and staff. Ultimately, our growth will be very beneficial to our Congregants, allowing us to offer more programs and services to our membership. My goal, as President, is to maximize the number of members who become truly active. We must expand the number of members who participate in educa?tional programs, who volunteer in our service organizations, who enjoy our services and social events, and who give all they can afford to the Temple because they appreciate the role of the Temple in their lives. We are certainly no longer a young struggling congregation. We have taken on a leadership role in the Jewish community and must rise to the challenges presented. This past year we cosponsored or hosted events for the Jewish Federation, B?nai B?rith, the ADL, the Interfaith Hospitality Net?work, the National Conference, and BBYO. This is only the beginning of the new role we as a Congregation will play in the future of Las Vegas. During the past few years I have been blessed with the opportu?nity to help create our beautiful sanctuary. It was a thrill to be there when the foundation was put in place and to have watched the building grow. It is now time to build some new foundations for our Temple?s future. It is time for our auxiliaries to mature and establish traditions of excellence and achievement that will attract many new participants and groom new leadership for the future. For those of you who are newer members, please accept my apology for not having spent more time meeting with you, getting to know you, and involving you in our Congregation. One of the difficulties of our fast paced growth has been our inability to spendthe time we should with each new family. Our Board will be concentrating on this important ?integration into the congregation? issue in the upcoming term. Another foundation for the future is the expansion of programs available to members. As part of our 1997-1998 budget, the Board has just approved the hiring of a full time program director. Our goal is to expand our adult education pro?grams, youth programs, and provide full time assistance to our Brother?hood and Sisterhood. This will be the year that our kitchen catches up to the building expansion. As a result of the generosity of one of our newer members and a matching donation from the Sisterhood, we are now designing and bidding out the remodeling of our kitchen facility. As with everything else it seems, we don?t have enough money to do all that we want to do, but we can surely get off to a great start. Another new program com?ing this year will be the start of our satellite religious school for our west side members. We have designed a program that keeps all of our students together on Sundays and makes weekday attendance easier (continued on page 17) c?2 (Special r()la c e Q'a Jieloutj A * A AuqusT 1997 home of Alan and Christy Molasky to kick off the beginning of prepa?rations for the High Holidays. Thank you so much to the Sister?hood for donating hot dogs and hamburgers and to the Molasky?s for being such wonderful hosts. Our Congregation is very lucky to have so many dedicated people in our choir and 1 am very proud of all of their accomplishments. The choir attracts singers from all walks of life, both members and non-members of our Temple. At the present time we have over 20 participants in the group from all different walks of life. We have two CPA?s, school teachers, house?wives, a nurse, my own voice coach and many others. Of course we couldn?t do anything without our accompanist Rhonda Greeson. Rhonda has been the Temple?s ac?companist for four years now and is a great asset to our Temple?s mu?sic program. During the High Holidays you will hear a variety of different styles of music including traditional, chassid- ic and contemporary compositions. You will also near solo?s, quartets and octets made up from our group of talented singers. Everyone works very hard throughout the summer preparing for the High Holidays to create inspiring and beautiful music for all to enjoy. Please contact me no later than August 7 if you are interested in singing with us for the High Holi- tnis days this year. B?Shalom, ?Bella ?o^ou have a jomify member or friend who is hospitalized? Rabbi Akselrad would like to help you and your family by visiting Temple members and friends of our congregation who have been hospitalized. Since there is no notification from the hospitals, please contact Karen at the Temple office at 733-6292 when a family member or friend is hospitalized. CONQREQATtON NeR TaMM AuqusT 1997 ? ? It is imperative for the members to understand this policy as it was established to make it easier for you and for the synagogue to manage its money. The synagogue requires regular payment of assessed fees in order to manage its? outstanding bills. If we do not have the funds available, we must slow down our programs and services. This makes it difficult for us. As our congregation grows, we have a bigger demand placed upon us. We must maintain ourselves in food standing with the power company, the isposal company, and we must continue to inform you about what is going on within the synagogue. We can not stop providing you with what we need to provide ... a Jewish House of Worship, a Jewish Education Center. We need your support in adhering to the policy and we need your support by maintaining your financial responsibilities in a timely manner. School News / Hear and 1 forget / See and 1 remember / Do and / Understand Anonymous I found this statement in a book that I read over the summer and decided to share it with you. Often parents question how they can get their children to like Hebrew school. Well, make it natural, something your whole family finds important. Make it spiritual - attend services and allow your children to share in life cycle events. Make it healing - use prayer as part of your daily lifestyle, in crisis and in good times. Share the benefits of membership at Congregation Ner Tamid with your child. Be proud to offer your child and generations to come a Jewish education. Noted publisher Joel Grishaver states in his book ?40 Things You Can Do to Save the Jewish People? that he is often asked, ?What one thing will make the most difference in my child?s Jewish future?? He regrets to inform the reader that there is no one key...Jewish life is Jewish life, it needs a combination of proper diet, exercise, etc. Jewish children are not bred but nurtured. As nurturing parents, as Jewish parents, we have to make the choice for our children. We must choose to expose them to living Jewishly. Education is not a choice, it is a command?ment. The Ve?ahafta states ?You shall teach your children diligently.? The M.B. Dalitz Religious School will offer your child an exciting year 5757-5758 hill of education, fun and friendship. With more than enough children signed up to keep the Preschool staff on their toes, we ran into some delays due to the governing regulations. So instead of trying to work through these issues and maybe not opening on time, we have decided to delay the opening. We will however, continue with some of the outstanding toddler programs we already have scheduled like our Mommy & Me and our Tot Shabbats. For more information on these programs, please call our office at 733-6292 and we will gladly put you in touch with the coordina?tors of these programs. Look for more information later in the year for details on our opening. Thank you. PreSchool Activities Savel7%* onimfitationsl Stop by theSisterhoodC
