CITY OF HOPE Public Relations Dept. 626-4611 (Hank Brown) (Suggested Column Material) CHUAN-KWANG (C.K.) YANG C.K. Yang, one of the world's track and field greats as a member of the Formosa Olympic Teams since 1956, will be international athlete honoree at the third annual Sportsmen's World Awards Presentations, June 28. The World Awards Presentation banquet, at which the "Victor" awards are presented to champions of the past, is sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope Medical Center, with proceeds going to aid in the battle against catastrophic maladies. The athlete honorees, representing eleven fields of sports from around the world, have been chosen by a National Selections Committee of ranking sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. In addition to his notable Olympic performances, C.K. Yang was the Asian Games Decathlon champion in 1954 and 1958, and established a world record in the Decathlon at Walnut, Calif., when he scored 9,121 points (old table), the only athlete ever to achieve that mark. Most track and field performers spend years becoming proficient in one event; decathlon performers must compete in ten! They are: 100-meters; Broad Jump; Shot Put; High Jump; 400-meters High Hurdles; Discus; Pole Vault; Javelin; and 1,500-meters. Yang's best marks were set in the High Hurdles and Pole Vault. He has a career high of 16' 5" in the latter event. In the j five AAU Decathlon Championships in which he competed, C.K. Yang \ took three firsts and two seconds. Most recently, he was coach of the Formosa Olympic Team in Mexico City in 1968. # # #
