Chamber of Commerce of the United States Local Chamber of Commerce Service Department Dwight Havens, manager ^S^J^l^ 1615 H STREET, N.W. ?╟≤ WASHINGTON 6, D. C. NAtional 8-2380 February 24, 1961 Mr. Al Freeman Promotion Director The Sands Highway 91 Las Vegas, Nevada Your letter, Mr, Freeman, . . * . . ?╟≤ has been seen by your friend Red Motley and he has asked me to reply to you with the information which you requested. First, may I compliment you on the appointment to the chairmanship of the Promotion Committee. It is my good fortune to be well acquainted with Cedric Olson, the Manager of your Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and on many occasions he has described for me the excellent work of your Las Vegas Chamber. Under separate cover, I am sending you a copy of the 1954 Survey of Local Chambers of Commerce, calling your attention to the information compiled on pages 54, 55, and 56, in particular. As a part of the 1954 Survey we asked some questions about tourist promotion and convention activities which will give you some idea as to the amount of money which chambers of commerce in the various population groups are allocating for this type of activity. I appreciate that this is specifically tourist and convention promotion and may not, in many instances, be directly related to the special promotions which you have in mind. On the other hand, some of this tourist and/or convention allocation is for the very type of promotion which you are anticipating. For example, one of the promotions of the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade is the Cherry Blossom Festival which you have read about, I am sure. The Cherry Blossom Festival itself is handled by the Greater National Capital Committee which is the tourist and convention promotion arm of the Board of Trade. The Festival itself operates on a budget of about $35,000, $25,000 of which is income from the activity itself, and $10,000 which is budgeted from the allocation of funds to the Greater National Capital Committee. No part of this $10,000 expenditure is for staff. The staff duties and activities are handled by the department staff of the Greater National Capital Committee.
