m This Clipping From WHERE MAGAZINE NEW YORK, N. Y. EARTH A KITT, songstress extraordinary, opens Monday, December 22, in the Waldorf's Empire Room After Dark LAUGHS AT THE LATIN QUARTER Johnny Puleo, a master of musical slapstick, is the reason for the current hilarity at the Latin Quarter. This pint-sized comedian and his towering five-man Harmonica Gang present a fast-moving act into which is interjected some skillful harmonica playing, none of which is permitted to be taken very, seriously. Johnny (4 feet, 6 inches tall) is regarded by the Gang as a lovable, but often troublesome and untrustworthy character, who breaks up both the audience and the engaging harmony of "Peg O' My Heart" and other tunes with his antics. Not a word is spoken throughout the act. Singing comedienne Sue Carson is extremely good with her casual, relaxed pratter and her original songs. One of the numbers, "The Seven Lively Arts," cleverly presents and elaborates on seven universally employed male approaches to the art of wooing the fair sex. Miss Carson's imitations of Pearl Bailev, Lena Home, Tere=a Brewer, and?╟÷believe it or not ?╟÷Billy Eckstine?╟÷could fool those personalities themselves. Her entire act is skillfully done with an air of comolete abandon. The productions offered in Donn Arden's "All About Dames" revue include a parade of beautiful showgirls in song and dance numbers in an array of colorful costumes and some good lighting effects. "Kansas '1880'" and "The Saga of Sadie Thompson" are both livelv production numbers. The latter, based on Somer set Maugham's story of Sadie, is filled with songs of saucy lyrics and suggestive dance numbers. In the last scene, "The Storm and Salvation," sound effects and lighting leave nothing to be desired in the creation of realistic thunder and lightning, and when rain pours from the overhead lights on the stage's perimeter, the storm is as real as a storm can be. As part of the revue, fantastic juggling ability is demonstrated by Francis Brunn, a small and agile Frenchman who seems to be all over the stage at one time. Music, lyrics, lighting, staging and talent throughout the revue have resulted in an exceptionally entertaining show. TOPS AT NUMBER ONE Clara Cedrone and Damian Mitchell, in J:heir sixth popular return engagement in the Number One Bar of the One Fifth Avenue Hotel, are tops with some new numbers thought up in their just-completed world entertainment tour. "New York's Our Home," their opener, is particularly apt and is done with gusto with able piano backing by Harold Fonville. Sophisticated numbers like "We're Terribly House and Garden" (in an apartment on the Lower East Side) point up the travelers' eternal weakness, souvenir buying. Television programs are satirized in a series of short imitations, and "Begin the Begat" brings out some fascinating rhythms as well as original lyrics. Suzanne Lake, who played Tuptin, the slave prince-s in the Broadway production of "The King and I," shares the starring bill in the Number One Bar with her lovely lilting musical comedy numbers, many from that popular Rodgers & Hammerstein show. "Shall We Dance," Getting to Know You," "Something Wonderful," and "Hello Young Lovers" are delivered with style and grace, as is "We Kiss in a Shadow," her own solo from "The King and I." THE TALENTED EARTHA Eartha Kitt, a modern show-business legend in herself, opens this Monday night, December 22, in the Empire Room of the Waldorf-Astoria with shows nightly at 9:15 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. Determined to become a star from her early teens, Miss Kitt earned early recognition with her talented and supple dancing and later through her inimitable voice. The show "New Faces of 1952," which skyrocketed the versatile young star to fame, was the beginning of an extensive night-club, stage, and movie career for Miss Kitt, who also published an autobiography, "Thursday's Child." She'll be appearing in the movie "Anna Lucasta," soon to open in New York, as well as in person in the Waldorf's lovely showcase. FRENCH CHARMER Lovely Franch chanteuse Jacqueline Francois, with beautiful voice to match her appearance, is finishing up an outstanding engagement this week in the Plaza's Persian Room. Her French versions of American favorites, many of them by Rodgers & Hart and several of them French songs like "Mademoiselle de Paris," may be heard through Wednesday evening, December 24. On Friday night, December 26, Carol Channing opens in the Persian Room.
