CITY OF HOPE Public Relations Dept. 208 W. Eighth St. Los Angeles, Calif. 90014 (213) 626-4611 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Hank Brown) Dr. Sammy Lee, one of America's most outstanding Olympic performers, will be among those honored at the third annual Sportsmen's World Awards banquet in Las Vegas on June 28. The genial physician, a springboard and high-diving champion for fifteen years, was a heavy favorite in the water sports category, according to ballots cast by more than a hundred leading sportscasters and sportswriters across the country. Dr. Lee will be one of a dozen athletic greats of the past to receive golden 'Victor' statuettes, symbol of the Sportsman's World Awards. The event at the Sands Hotel is sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope, with proceeds going to support the free, nonsectarian Pilot Medical Center. A native Californian, Dr. Lee rose to sports prominence when he won the national AAU outdoor platform diving crown in 1940, representing Occidental College. Two years later, he captured the senior 3-meter springboard and platform diving championships, representing the Pasadena A.C. He repeated the platform diving title in 1946. As an Olympic competitor, Sammy Lee proved to be a worthy ambassador as well as outstanding competitor. One of the most (more)
