MINUTES ABSENT Sister Klaryta Earl Monsey Shirley Rynek Elaine Steinberg Myrna Williams Lisa Zenoff Dwayne Lawrence Naomi Goldsmith Polly Morger Shendell Doty Sasha Semenoff Edythe Katz familiarized the group with the position of the School District on the Holocaust during the past two years. They have been very receptive to including the study of the Holocaust in their world hist@ry classes. About 20 people ; associated with the Clark County School District (both State and City levels) and some from the University, attended a Conference in Los Angeles in April on the "Teaching of the Holocaust" Eileen Kollins briefly went over the Conference program. She brought out the fact that one of the main points was that, perhaps by teaching what happened during the Holocaust, hopefully we can help prevent it from happening again. Edythe mentioned the meeting that was held on June 4 at the Federation office with members of the CCSD and State Bd. of Education. Minutes of that me eting were distributed. The following are two major decisions made: 1. The necessity of a Holocaust Re source Center 2 . Conference to be held in mid-November for teachers and Dept. chairmen for training on presentation of Holocaust information. RESOURCE CENTER - ideas 1. Joe Kohn asked about putting together a choral group as background to the show . 3 . Suggested list of tapes and/or films for Center: page 2 "The Bravest War" - film about the last 3 wks. in Warsaw ghetto - "Night & Fog" - French film - "Righteous Christians" - film - "Anne Frank in Maine" - film - "Interview with Theodore Bikel" - tape 6. It was suggested that volunteers from some of the Jewish organizations help set up and staff the Center .... Eileen K. has some library ex-perience; Maria Simpson can translate from Polish, French and German into English. 7. State Board will issue publications in the School District regarding the types of materials available at this Center on hhe Holocaust. SPEAKERS BUREAU 1. Joe Kohn suggested that the Bureau have a "special purpose" - - Goal - what are we trying to accomplish - Specific materials for different age levels - Special training for teachers in school 2. Speakers should be those survivors willing to speak about their past experiences during the Holocaust ..... they should be available to the schools, organizations, etc. 3. Speech therapist, Dorothy Bokelman, CCSD, would be available to assist speakers with their presentations. HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS How can we locate Holocaust surv ivors or offsprings of survivors? - Gene Greenberg talked about a "Second Generation" group (children of survivors). Eileen mentioned that a group called "The '39 Club" was a prominent part of the Los Angeles Conference. Edythe will contact Leopold Page, President of the '39 Club in L.A.,about the possibility of staJi.ng one here in Las Vegas. Gene and Joe Kohn will work together to get this publicized in radio & TV ..? also possibly putting an ad in the newspapers. - Gene to chair group consisting of Joe Kohn, Lil Kronberg, Maria Simpson and Sister Klaryta about locating other survivors in the city . - Emphasis was made regarding the necessity of having survivors present at the Teacher Conference in November. Michael Chen asked about what amount of time would be given to the Holocaust s tudies in the School curriculum . Eileen said that the Los Angel es admini-strators emphasized they would give "more " time than in the past. Here in Nevada it would be part of the world history class, but specific hours are not yet possible to define. Michael also mentioned he has been using a book entitled "Holocaust" in the Hebrew School. HOLOCAUST EDUCATION COMMITTEE June 5, 1980 page 3 Ruth Hanusa will work with Edythe in contacting Tom Wilson and Ruth Pitts from UNLV about possible studies in the University. They also attended the Los Angeles Conference. FINANCES The Federation had given money in the past, but further allocations may not be available. - George Katz suggested talking to various Jewish organizations about having fund raising earmarked for specific items for the Resource Center. He also mentioned seeking out private sources for additional funds. After July 1, Edythe and Eileen will contact Debbie Bach, ADL in Los Angeles, about the proposed projects and material that is needed.
