ROLL CALL PRESENT Senator A. Chastain Senator M. APPROVAL OF SENATE MINUTES 17-11 AND 17-17 Senate Meeting Minutes 17-11 were not approved. Senate Meeting Minutes 17-17 were approved. IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS President Hendrick - He announced that the trip to New Orleans for the Final Four was an eye opener, in that many people think that our University is not very academic, just as Saturday Night Live displayed on television. He wanted to have a resolution in defense for the University. Senate President Pro Tempore Evenson - Announced that the trip to New Orleans was a good trip. He also introduced Senate Bill 12 and 13. BOARD, COMMITTEE, DIRECTOR REPORTS Yellin1 Rebel - On April 7, there will be a special issue of the Yellin' Rebel, there will be a color supplement inside. NSA - Voter Registration Drive will be April 23rd. Intramurals - They will be co-sponsorine Reach Volleyball with Entertainment and Programming for Springfest. They are also having a hard time in getting playing fields for the different events that intramurals sponsors. Radio Board - Jack Spicer - He is working on getting more faculty involved and getting media representatives. Appropriations Board - There will be a meeting on Tuesday at 1:00PM in room 201 of MSU. (April 7). Entertainment and Programming - Mike Mixer - Springfest has started and will go on till Sunday April 5, 1987. KUNV - Working on starting "a Spanish Programming with the station. The Senate recognized Students of the International Meditation Society as an organization. VI. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Nominations for vacant Academic Advising Seats (2). 1) Cynthia Bazemberg 2) Christine Mangual Jamal Allen withdrew his nomination for Academic Advising B. Nominations for vacant Arts and Letters Seat. 1) Ben Martin 2) Toby Romer 3) George Chamberlain 5) Robert Cherhoniak 5) Todd Gottschalk 6) Kurt Hildebrand C. Appointment of Arts and Letters Seat. Motion to approve by Senator Leroy, and to have the the candidates speak for two minutes, after which there will be a vote, and the top vote getter wins. Seconded by Senator Spicer. MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-18 3-2-87 PAGE 3 D. There was discussion. Motion carried, with no objections. Ben Martin addressed the Senate. Toby Romer addressed the Senate. George Chamberlain addressed the Senate. Kurt Hildebrand addressed the Senate to withdraw his nomination. Robert Cherhoniak addressed the Senate. Todd Gottschalk addressed/the Senate. Toby Romer was sworn into office by Justice Mike Mixer. Motion by Senator Tiffany to move out of the order of the day, and back into item A of Unfinished Business. (A. Nominations for vacant Academic Advising Seat. (1) ) Seconded by Senator Muir. There was discussion. Senator Gentile left meeting at 4:55 (unexcused). Jamal Allen withdrew his nomination for Academic Advising Seat, Approval of $2765 for computer system. Motion to remove from the table. Seconded by Senator Harrington. There was discussion. v. Motion by Senator Smith to end debate, with no objections. MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-18 3-2-87 PAGE 4 Motion carried with eleven in favor, three opposed (Goldstein, Retke, Mentnech),two abstentions (Hopkins, Romer). E. Approval of $400 for Panhellenic Club. Motion to approve by Senator Evenson. Seconded by Senator Smith. There was discussion. Panhellenic Vice-President Jennifer Pannullo addressed the Senate. Motion to amend that reports by) given from the trip they will be going on. Multitude of seconds. Call for a vote to approve $400 to the Panhellenic Club and bring back a report from there trip. Motion carried with fifteen in favor, and one abstention (Smith). VII. NEW BUSINESS A. Approval of $169 for Jewish Student Union. Motion to approve by Senator Tiffany. Seconded by Senator Zayas-Dorchak. There was discussion. Motion to amend that funds would be taken out of the 903 account (Entertainment and Programming) by Senator Harrington, with no objections. Call for a vote. Motion carried with no objections. Directive by Senator Harrington to Entertainment and Programming to discuss problems with International Festival. Seconded by Senator Evenson. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried with no objections. B. Payment of stipend for February for Kunv Assistant Programming Director. MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-18 3-2-87 PAGE 5 Motion to approve by Senator Spicer. Seconded by Senator Mentnech. There was discussion. Rob Rosenthal addressed the Senate. Call for a vote. Motion carried for payment of stipend of $100 for February for KUNV Assistant Programming Director, with, fifteen in favor, one abstention (Romer). C. Override of Bylaw 1 (To consider item E). There was discussion. D. Approval of Senate Bill #11. Motion to approve by Senator M. Chastain Seconded by Senator A. Chastain. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried with no objections. E. Override of Bylaw 1( To consider item E). Motion to approve by Senator Smith. Seconded by Senator Evenson. There was discussion. Motion by Senator Smith to end debate. Seconded by Senator A. Chastain. Call for a vote. Motion failed, with five in favor, seven opposed (Spicer, Zayas-Dorchak, Harrington, Mentnech, Tiffany, Retke, Goldstein), and three abstentions (Gomez, Romer, Hopkins). MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-18 PAGE 6 F. Approval of contract for election workers with Nevada Federation of Garden Club in the amount of $1400, for general election. Motion to approve by Senator Mentnech. Multitude of seconds. There was discussion. Call for the vote. Motion carried with no objections. G. Approval for $599 per person to Washington D.C. for advertising convention, to be taken out of the 905 account (The Yellin' Rebel). Motion to approve by Senate President Zayas. Seconded by Senator Mentnech. Senate President Zayas_passed the gavel to Senate President Pro Tempore Evenson at this time. There was discussion. Motion to amend that Dr. Pinney should be sent first and Gretchen Rexroad would be a seconded choice, by Senator Harrington, seconded with no objections. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Amendment failed with one in favor (Retke),ten opposed, five abstentions (Zayas-Dorchak, M . Chastain, Hopkins, Tiffany, Gomez). Motion to call for the question by Senator Harrington. Seconded by Senate President Zayas. There was no discussion. Call for a vote on the main motion to approve $599 per person to Washington D.C. for advertising convention to be taken out of the 905 account (The Yellin' Rebel), Motion carried with nine in favor, three opposed (Evenson, Goldstein, Mentnech), two abstentions(Romer, Zayas-Dorchak). Senate President Pro Tempore Evenson passed the gavel back to Senate President Zayas. MINUTES SENATE MEETING 17-18 4-2-87 PAGE 7 VIII. OPEN DISCUSSION Senator Spicer - apologized for taking up the time of the Senate in speaking on the behalf of someone who did not have intentions of running for the Academic Advising Seat. He thought that Senate Bill #12 was a good idea, but thinks that it needs to be changed a bit. His personal opinion for the Senate Bill #12 was by no means a personal attack on anyone. Senator Harrington - Mentioned that producing Senate Bills are a part of the Senates job in legislation. He felt that the meeting was run very well, and was glad that members of the gallery had stayed. Senator Evenson - Introduced Senate Bill #13. Senator Smith - Would like to see Senate Bill #14 on Monday, so that everyone can look it over with Senate Bill #12. Senator Zayas-Dorchak - Thought that Senator Spicer had handled the Radio Board Meeting very well. She also wished luck to the candidates for the election. She also mentioned that she would draw up a resolution about Saturday Night Live. IX. ADJOURNMENT Senate Meeting 17-18 was adjourned at 7:45PM by- Senate President Zayas.
