Contrast doesn?╟╓t necessarily m benefit Miss Grayson, but it?╟╓s part it and parcel of the kind of lush, | richly costumed and ably executed 5 revue which has become the Latin j Quarter specialty. This isn't the ?╟╓place for sophisti-f8 cates who may come looking for; B ?╟úart?╟Ñ or even cleverness. It?╟╓s a j gp splashy, brash and eye-popping production and the customers (a I goodly percentage of them out-of-1 towners) eat it up. Acts, some of I them held over from the last ?╟úedi-||r tion,?╟Ñ are well balanced and vir-tually every one goes over to big gl mitting. ?√ß ;/ - J Line comes up with its usual' 1 standard and shapely attractions : and, as the piece de resistance, \ Arden has jets of water spurting I from ceiling to floor around the | stage (drenching close ringsiders gl In - the doing) as Tanya Corlett takes a shower onstage. Attractively vi gowned (though she explained to 1 the audience on opening night that m she had to go on despite the loss I of her music and costumes), she I offers a repertoire ranging from 9 ?╟úShimmy Like My Sister Kate?╟Ñ to grand opera. Miss Grayson hardly I ranks as a singer of stature, even J within the limits of a night club 1 act. Her voice is forced, almost | pamiully so, in the operatic arias PI which she performs with more conviction th^n feeling. Singer obviously feels that her voice is her act and so she doesn?╟╓t g| need anything else. Result is a w rather dull stance, though the // opening night audience, at least, ?║| received her uncritically and with d enthusiasm. ?╟úMy Fair Lady?╟Ñ num-;^ber leads into ?╟úSo In Love,?╟Ñ which X ; segues into Tosca, ?╟úHi Lili, Hi Lo,?╟Ñ ' jthe tame ?╟úMy Sister Kate?╟Ñ number and then a weepy rendition of a ?╟úMadame Butterfly?╟Ñ itria. Miss Grayson gets by on the strength of I ^personality, which is pleasing, but j ?√ßthere must be a better way to [ ' showcase the act, |g|| Comedian Jack Durant gets bill- j kj||ing as the extra added attraction ; 4 and he hits just the right, low note j for the room. He works hard and ! gets plenty of laughs, though some \ !||??f his material is in bad taste. I The St. Leon Troupe from Aus-illtralia (six men and two gals) reg- l listers with a strong, aero stint d which tends to become somewhat | f^repetitious, but features some sen-| : sational solo work; Bob DeVoye | is a definite crowd pleaser d^with its agile terp routines; Queti | Clavijo does her flamenco heel-1 and-toe drumming to appreciative ; ] mitting. Outstanding in several I numbers is Gina Genardi who has a fresh and vibrant personality and j is excellent in her solo numbers. 1 Ray Kyle is the featured singer 1 who, like Miss Genardi, gets the I support of the chorus.
