Daily Variety (Cir. 7,270) 1111 Q MOULIN ROUGE/ f ($5.50 Package)? M %j ) Spike Jones, attired in his cus-{ tomary striped suit and straw hat, picked up wife Helen Grayco and with a crew of five, barnstormed into Frank Sennes?╟╓ Moulin Rouge ^ipsday night. Jones, making his ^S^cond hoedown in this big room in two years, is a welcome mat. His unsophisticated approach to music, with the assistance of little man Billy Barty, George Rock, Gil | Bernal, Len Garrie and Bobby I Lewis, is nonsensical but enter- taining. J ones?╟╓ revue has all the ingredients of Olson & Johnson?╟╓s ?╟úHellzapoppin?╟╓ ?╟Ñ plus the added vocal talent of the vivacious Miss Grayco. The lovely blonde singer opened the ?╟úSpiketacular of 1959?╟Ñ with ?╟úAll of Me?╟Ñ and it came over well enough for her to follow with *^Come Rain Or Come Shine,?╟Ñ ?╟úGuess Who I Saw Today,?╟Ñ ?╟úOne For the Road?╟Ñ and ?╟úBewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.?╟Ñ Jones?╟╓ aggregation, tabbed as the ?╟úBand That Flays For Fun?╟Ñ ham- mers across musical sounds from ^$OQO B.C. to the present and makes you wonder ?╟úwhat?╟╓s the differ- ence??╟Ñ They cop the crowd?╟╓s atten- tion throughout a zany session of shooting off guns, firecrackers, ringing bells, horns, and you name it, they play it. Barty stands out as a major contributor in captur- ing the laughs and at times seems to tower over the big boys in per- formance. His comical antics and ability to sing, dance, mimic and play the drums, are a show in it- self. A pun-ful takeoff of a rock?╟╓ V roll singer enacted by Bernal, and with the aid of Rock and Barty, scores as fun for all. Bernal also lives up to his monicker of ?╟úSex- On-A-Sax?╟Ñ by soloing on the pipe shaped horn with a jam that leads him on and off stage. Another spot in the show is the presence of a long-legged cutie sitting on a rocker knitting away, and in spite of the world war on stage, never bats an eye. A production closer presented in the dark with only the luminous lights of the performers costumes?╟╓ being visible and aided by the addi- tion of the D'onn Arden Dancers, is impressive. Dick Stalme*s house- band, under the batonning of Brother Joe, backs up the show and lends the proper musical note where needed. Show is in for four weeks. Kafa^ Los Angeles* Calif. JACKSON. *y Those me%y Jjmldcaps of mu?╜cA world, Spike Jones aft' fes ?╟úband that plays' fon# fun,?╟Ñ hake taken over in a big way at Frank I Sennes?╟╓ Moulin Rouge. it is called the ?╟úSpiketac- ular Revue 1959 and is along the zany lines one would ex- pect from this organization. Most of the routines are new but they follow the same gen eral style, which calls for more showmanship and tim- ing than one might imagine from just viewing. Wacky Jones has a real wacky I crew with him and, for the most part, he lets them run free and easy, working all j over the huge theater. 1 Little Billy Barty sparks: Smuch of the fun and his takeoffs on Liber ace, Jimmy Cagney, Ted Lewis?╟╓ shadow and especially on Louis Pri- ma provide the highlight of |the show. , _ . The Prima bit is a classic With an off stage recording of Keely and Louis being J mouthed by Billy and a big lad in a wig like Miss Smith. Also effective is the seg- ment where the band plays ?╟úDinner music for people who are not very hungry?╟Ñ and another where they rib the styles of many of today?╟╓s big bands. Breezy It?╟╓s a raucous show, brassy and breezy with contrast pro- vided by He 1 e n Grayco?╟╓s smooth bluesy stylings on several song numbers prior to the actual appearance of 'the band. The Grayco family was out in force to welcome I their girl and they joined in! the big hand she got for ?╟úAil Of Me,?╟Ñ ?╟úBewitched, Bothered and Bewildered?╟Ñ and ?╟úGuess | Who I Saw Today.?╟Ñ in addition to the Jones group Showman Sennes is| also offering Donn Arflgn?╟╓sl ?╟úBig Ben Beat?╟Ñ production! numbers and holding over I Channing Pollock, one of the I smoothest manipulators ir the legerdemain business.
