Well, multiply that hassle by 129 and you get a rough idea of what Fluff Le Coque goes through every night. Fluff is company manager of the ?╟úJubilee** production at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. She serves as a sort of mother superior to the 129 showgirls, who execute such numbers as the betrayal of Samson. To get them through two shows a night and three on Saturday, Fluff must demand perfection and command respect?╟÷and she gets both. A striking woman in her mid-50s, the red-haired Fluff works with the show?╟╓s nine line captains, supervising rehearsals, maintaining discipline and coordinating roles in the seven-act show. Fluff also does the book work, hires and fires the cast and works closely with the extravaganza?╟╓s producer-di-rector, Paris-based Donn Arden, with whom she has been associated for 26 years. Fluff recently screened performers for auditions for the MGM Grand Hotel show in Reno. Asked what qualities she seeks, Fluff explains, ?╟úThey must be able, to dance, of course. They must be tall. Their training has to show.?╟Ñ In addition, the dancers have to understand technique from ballet to jazz, have physical beauty and a radiant personality, A former dancer, ballet master and line captain, Fluff performed and starred in many shows in the United States and Europe before joining the hotel as company manager in 1973. She credits team effort with producing a quality show. She personally handles any problems with the principals. ?╟úThey should have ego because that?╟╓s what makes them good. I understand temperament.?╟Ñ Indeed, she acquired the nickname Fluff back in Butte, Montana, where she grew up, because of her similarity in temperament to the neighborhood terror, a cat named Fluff, Seventeen years ago she married another performer, trombonist Archie Le Coque, She has three grown stepchildren, but no children of her own. ?╟úIt means you end up with no extension of yourself. You can?╟╓t pass on genes?╟÷only your knowledge,?╟Ñ she says. This she does well, instilling a deep sense of pride in her craft. ?╟úIt?╟╓s a business I love,?╟Ñ she says. ?╟úWhat keeps you going is that it?╟╓s constantly changing and you?╟╓re in touch with young people all the time. ?╟Ñ It must be what keeps Fluff young and dynamic herself. Fluff and her assistant, Michael Pratt, advise dancers. NEXT WEEK: Meet a Master Chef ?√φ Ch-1 sp Ww 17
