Eighth St. Los Angeles, Calif. 90014 (213) 626-4611 (Hank Brown) Los Angeles ?╟÷ Peter De Paolo, the man who helped put a lot of the "roar" into the "Roaring Twenties" will be among those honored at the Third Annual Sportsmen?╟╓s World Awards at Las Vegas?╟╓ Sands Hotel, June 28, The popular auto race driver who set several early records and has a victory in the famed Indianapolis "500" to his credit, will join a dozen all-time great athletes from around the world, selected by a National Selections Committee of more than one hundred sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. The World Sportsmen?╟╓s Awards banquet and honors ceremonies are sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope Medical Center, with proceeds benefiting the free, nonsectarian pilot hospital and research center in its battle against catastrophic disease, De Paolo began his racing career in 1920 as a riding mechanic for his famous uncle, Ralph DePalma. Two years later, Pete was a driver on his own. He was acclaimed the "golden man" of racing when he became the first driver to top the 100 mph mark for 500 miles, in winning the Indy crown in 1925. His speed was 101.13 mph ?╟≤?╟÷ a record which stood for seven years. (more)
