Kol Ari El The Lion's Voice The Monthly Chronicle of Adat Ari El A Reform Congregation Embracing Traditional Judaism December 2000 4 Kislev - 5 Tevet Vol. IX Issue No. 12 Kol Harav...The Rabbi's Voice "Seeing " G-d A t the time of this writing I had studied the Torah portion VaYera which begins, "And G-d appeared to [Abraham]. We know G-d appeared to our patriarch Abraham, to Moses and to the prophets, but does G-d appear to us today? If so, how? For most of us, G-d appears to us by way of G-d's wondrous works. The miracles that are daily with us and those that reveal themselves on special occasions are our way to 'see' G-d. It is hard to deny G-d's presence at the birth of a child. All of one's accomplishments are paled next to witnessing the birth of one's own child or grandchild. We are witness to the most beautiful sunsets in Las Vegas with dramatic wisps of color that decorate our Mt. Charleston backdrop. We marvel at the precise clockwork motion of the sun, moon, stars and planets and are in awe of the universal laws that govern the smallest particles and energy of our physical existence. We share in the peacefulness of and the regeneration of our spiritual souls during Shabbat. In exchange for acting as the "Flying Rabbi" Brenner promised us a performance that we could use as a fundraiser. The one stipulation he gave us was that we had to wait until he was booked in Las Vegas for a run at one of the hotels. This was last spring and we have waited and waited to get a date. Good fundraisers are hard to organize for any organization, and when you get a lead on a good draw to bring people outside of your Synagogue to an event, you greatly anticipate it So, we anxiously awaited this coming to us. Well, finally our prayers have been answered, but as with all answered prayers, you sometimes get things you didn't bargain for. While David Rabbi Gary M. Still, it is a gift from G-d and we are doing whatever we have to do to make it as fog a success as we can So, for our last board meeting, we spent quite a bit of time planning this event. Getting a place to hold the gate, which had to be during the afternoon to fit into Brenner's schedule; getting the word out, decorating, putting together the rest of the event, which will mciudo the Steve Beyer Orchestra, as well as a silent auction, which would allow us to increase the financial rewards of this fundraiser. As anyone who has put these things together knows, it takes a lot of planning and work to poll it off. We're very excited about the prospects and we invite anyone who wants to help put it together, to call Helen in the office and let us know. We have a lot that needs to get done, but from experience, I can say that it's a lot of fun at times, and it feels reaiy good to be at a function Pike this, knowing that you helped make it a reality. Can some of us be blind to daily witnessing G-d's gifts to us, G-d's greatness and wisdom? We traditionally offer prayers of thanksgiving when viewing a spectacle of nature. We even recite a prayer for the simplest acts of eating a piece of fruit or drinking a sip of water. These prayers are structured so that we may not ignore our constant connection with G-d. I performed a wedding this afternoon of two Russian Jews who came to this country eleven and twelve years ago. Both were bom in the very same Russian city of parents who clung onto their Jewish heritage even during a time when the former Soviet Union did not allow for them to outwardly express their Jewish connection. The couple met for the first time in this great country of ours, the USA. Did I 'see' G-d's hand as they stood under the Chupah? Could I deny G-d's fulfillment of years of prayers by Jews in our country and around the world asking for our brothers and sisters locked in behind the Iron Curtain to grant them the freedom so cherished? Before the Chupah I assigned Hebrew names for the wedding couple and to their two witnesses who had similar Russian Jewish backgrounds. All four people stood on our Bimah sporting new Hebrew names reflecting names from our Torah sharing the experience with a Chupah and G-d appeared to me. If you had been there, G-d would have appeared to you too. We have the good fortune to see G-d in so many ways and places if we would only look and see. B'Shalom Rabbi Gary M. As I think most of you know, I am a woman and Jewish by birth, which means by logical extension that I am also a chronic worrier. The Jewish women of my childhood always seemed to be worried about something and there was always so much to be worried about - would there be enough food at the party, would their daughters have dates on Saturday nights, would their sons be accepted to Columbia University? Face it, Jews as a group are so used to having some misfortune to worry about that when there really isn't anything worrisome we tend to have to make something up - it doesn't seem natural not to carry the heavy yoke of worry around one's neck like an albatross. And Jewish women in particular have seemed over time to have cornered the market on worry. This inbred need to fret over some item, no matter how trivial, is steeped in a much deeper, darker tradition - the fact that for most of our history, with our enemies looming just over the horizon, the proverbial foot dangling off the edge of the cliff and the other perched ominously on the banana peel, we've had much cause to feel anxiety riddled and concerned. Throughout the centuries, going all the way back to Biblical times, we've always had to keep one eye half opened while we slept, one eye over our shoulders as we've gone about the business of everyday life. I read the paper these days and the glare of Israel once again as the hot spot of the world causes alarm. Indeed, I am aware that whenever Americans are cautioned not to travel to Israel, the situation is a cause for deep concern. But I can take this concern to new and dizzying heights. I worry that if Al Gore is elected president, is incapacitated in some way and is succeeded by Joe Lieberman, the world may very well blow up. Of course, I also worry that if Gore is not elected president, that this is a sign of some deeply rooted anti-Semitic, neo-Nazi conspiracy and that none of us will be safe, even here in America. Think this is nuts? I'm the very worst kind of congenitally worried type - after all, I am a Jewish mother. I've finally figured out, over time, that if I worry about the inconsequential, I have little time to worry about the really important stuff of life. This is almost a blessing, as the larger issues are sometimes almost unbearable to think about. And, you know, a while back I read a book about learning how not to sweat the small stuff. It was obvious to me from the start that the author was not a Jewish mother. Until next month... We are happy that so many people are enjoying this new addition to our Synagogue. Our next evening will be on January 11th and will feature a musical group. Each month, the sanctuary is magically changed to a 60's coffee house with atmosphere, coziness and warmth. To continue to make this a success, we need volunteers. We need people to help set up the dessert buffet; greet people at the door and accept their money; and set up the room for the evening. Bat Mitzvah of Danielle Arianna Remer Danielle Arianna Remer, daughter of Sharon Lee Remer, will become a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, December 16 at Adat Ari El. Danielle is an eighth grade honor student at Hyde Park Middle School in the Academy of Science and Mathematics. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and is a cheerleader for the basketball team. Danielle's first loves are writing and music. She has become an accomplished pianist and is now studying the violin. Studying for her Bat Mitzvah with Rabbi Golbart has given her the opportunity to expand her vocal talents. Danielle chose the significant date of December 16 for her Bat Mitzvah for it will be 13 years ago that Danielle came to the United States of America from Guatemala to start her new life.
