ELLSWORTH TINES The Sportsmen's World Award Presentations ?╟÷ the "Oscars" of athletics ?╟÷ this year will include H, Ellsworth Vines, tennis star extraordinary, when sports fans gather at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas June 27, to do honor to the greatest competitors of the past. In a sport known fdr its giants in the pre-World War II "golden years," Ellsworth Vines burst upon tennis like a rocket, whose glow never diminished. Though Tilden had left the amateur ranks by 1930, Vines, at age 19, came to the prestigious National Singles at Forest Hills with an impressive schoolboy record already behind him. By tourney's end, the Pasadena, California youth had come from behind to vanquish England's Fred Perry in the semi-finals and handily whipped Martin Lott, Jr., to become the twentieth American to win the tournament in 50 years. He repeated his victory in the National Singles the following year, 1938^a^ei> W??n kack-to-back British Singles championships in 1937 and While it is difficult to evaluate ability of stare from different' eras, a syndicated sports article in 1968 quoted several prominent tennis players and writers who named their choices for the top five players in tennis history. Not one of them omitted the name of Vines, and two said that on the basis of any given match, Vines was, in fact, the top. Bill Tilden, most commonly considered the greatest player of them all, played 80 matches against Vines, and of that number, Vines won 6l, He was the only man ever to win more matches from Tilden than he lost. Vines also was a member of the 1932 U.S. Davis Cup Team. Vines turned professional in 1934, Joining the Tilden Tennis Troupe, and scored an immediate success. He exited from tennis in 1939, in his final match defeating Fred Perry in five sets to win the U.S.Professional Tennis championship in Beverly Hills. Sconce an athlete always an athlete, and Ellsworth Vines took up goii with a vengeance, becoming good enough to join the pro golf tour, where he enjoyed six fruitful years. In the course of his golfing career vines won two Southern California Opens and was Southern California PGA champion one year. He now is the club pro at the posh La Quinta Country Club in Southern California. . ,*^ne ^7, Ellswroth Vines will join nine other sports immortals w o will be honored at the Sportsmen's World Awards. Their exemplary periormances, on and off the fields of athletic endeavor, have earned nem the Victor Award as selected by a blue ribbon National Selections committee of sportswriters and sportscasters. The Awards presentations. ??? e. Linkletter and featuring celebrity guest presenters and entertainers, will be syndicated for national television by Hughes leievision Network.
