put their ideas rjtirtcn. ana as 'Holiday On Ice9 An Undeniable Smash By HOWELL PEARRE From New York at the turn of the century to the rise of the motion picture, the newest edition of "Holiday On Ice" lives up to its famous name, offering a dazzling array of beautiful girls, sumptuous costumes and J brilliant skating. In the first of eight performances Tuesday night at the Municipal Auditorium, a large and enthusiastic audience was treated to the summer's one undeniable smash hit, two and one-half hours of pure show business razzle-dazzle at its very best. In! addition to keeping his skaters in nearly perpetual motion, choreographer - director Donn Arden has made them dance as beautifully as they skate, adding an exciting, new dimension to the over-all production. His patterns, are especially dramatic in "Jungalero, voodoo number, complete with witch doctors, whirling colors and drum beats. Highly Expressive Arden is again at the top of! his choreographic form in 'The] Gates of Granada," particularly] in his arrangement of star j Ronnie Robertson's solo, a! simple but highly expressive! mime performed to music from! "Man of La Mancha." Robertson is as much a dramatic actor as he is a fine skater and he can also turn on considerable charm in the number that salutes Fred Astaire. Each of his scenes ends with one of those fantastic spins that make the whole thing look so breathtakingly easy, at least, for someone as good as he is. Oh the distaff side, all is love-j liness and talent, especially] Alice Quessy, Grete Borgen and) Anna Galmarini. Miss Quessy has a good] cchiedic flair, especially in the] Pearl White portion of tha Hollywood production number! Her earlier rendition of Eva Tanguay is one of the first 08 the show's many crowd pleasers. Miss Borgen, one of Norway's! finest imports, shines n a bright, pleasant number called "Rockin' Happy," complete yellow balloons and a gracefully gliding chorus to her. Miss Galmarini, a short, dynamic performer, is equally at home in a clown's costume or as a jungle cat girl, alternating whimsy with drama. 'Connie' and 'Glyde' On the comic side, Paul An-j dre and Johnny Leech provide! a knock down, slapstick version of rough and tumble gangsters, with the appropriate names of "Connie" and "Glyde." Freddy Wittop's costumes are a show in themselves but they are just right in every detail for this kind of ice extravaganza, creating a special atmosphere of bold color with opulent showiness. "Holiday On Ice" is the best summer prescription for the en tire family, the kind of night out that combines all the exciting features of total theater in one fast-moving, big, gaudy, happy show. < KNOXVILLE CIVIC COLISEUM A REAL SMASH HIT!! ,_ Thru TONIGHT SUNDAY, AUG. 18 Nitely 8 P.M.
