Page 2 WHEEL OF ROTARY MAY 11, 1950 NO PROGRAM TODAY In deference to Helldorado and the many businessmen, members of Rotary, ' who are making preparations to have entries in the Old Timers' Parade, our meeting today will he short and ' without any formal program. '"* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * LAST WEEK Last week, we were very fortunate in having our old Rotary friend, Jim Dunaway, of Havrthorne Rotary, as our guest speaker Without any time to prepare his talk, Jim made a very inspiring Rotary address. He has had wide experience in speaking "before Rotary Clubs in all parts of the country, especially in District 160 and is considered one of the top speakers in this District. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ARMED FORCES DAY On Thursday, May 18th, Col. Joe L. Mason will send to our Rotary meet-ing a representative of each branch of the service at Nellis Air Field. The week of May 14th, through May 30th, equipment used by the four major services will be set up in prominent business establishments of Las Vegas, Yfith the larger displays such as air-craft and large calibre guns being lo-cated around the city hall. Officers will deliver short talks on the observance of Armed Forces Da; They are prepared to offer a full p: gram including combat films. OUR NEW OFFICERS Every member of our Club extends congratulations to our new officers: ALLYE LAWSON, President HARRY ALLEN, Sccrctary JOHN BEVILLE, Treasurer The reluctance of several of the Directors to accept the various offi-ces because of the press of other business was finally overcome yester-day afternoon when the Board of Direc-tors met and put sufficient pressure on the group to break the deadlock. We all realize that it is a real sacrifice on the part of members of the Board of Directors when they ac-cept the duties of officers, consider-ing the many duties and the time re-quired With a Club of 95 members, the duties of President and Sedretary especially make large demands upon any Rotarian's time and strength. ALLYE LAWSON is a "natural" for President—He is the son of one of the founders of the Club—he has been Secretary for three years, and orig-inally joined the Club in 1333. ALLYE, HARRY and JOHN, Rotary Club salutes youl * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEW CLASSIFICATIONS Proposals have been received for filling the following classifications: PUBLIC DEFENSE, Air: REFINED OIL PRODUCTS, Retailing MOTOR FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION Members wishing to propose names to fill any of those classifications .them with the Secretary. WHEEL OF ROTARY Page3 THE CONFERENCE The Conference of the 160th District of Rotary will be held at the "beautiful Huntington Hotel, Pasadena, May 24, 35, and 26th A great program covering al phases of Rotary activities set forth in inspiring words by great speakers will comprise, roughly, the Conference pro-ceedings, providing thrills for every Rotarian who can attend. However, the Rotary inspiration is not, by any means, all that is being provided for the dele-gates, but the program of entertainment and social features is outstanding. President Leonard expects every mem-ber who can possibly do so to attend the Conference. A good attendance will be a real mark of distinction for the C l u b . / . . . It was April 21, 1927, that Las Vegas won for the third time, the cup for the best attendance at the Rot-ary Conference at Stockton. The dates Las Vegas Rotary won the attendance cup before that were in 1924, at San Jose; 1925 at San Diego. Frosty Mildrcn was President in 1927, and Las Vegas put on the program for the afternoon session of the Con-ference. We had a fine Rotary Publi-cation to distribute to all those pres-ent. It was then called "The Boulder Dam". The speaker of the day was Charlie Squires, v/ho took occasion to boost for Boulder Dam, which then was in the dim future. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * HOSPITALIZED Les Edwards is confined to a "Cer-tain hospital" whose name we must not dibulge, leaving it up to our members to guess. Ken confined in a Los Angeles hospital for treatment. We wish for both of them quick and complete recovery. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * VISITING ROTARIANS The following, members of other Rotary Clubs, were present at our last meeting: ROYAL FRENCH, M.D. Marshalltown.Ia. J0RD0N"JIM" DUNAWAY, Hawthorne.Cal. W.E. "BAKE" BAKER, Boulder City THOMAS C. ROSS, Santa Barbara IRVING WILLIAMS, Bakersfield, Cal. THOMAS LOVELL, San Bernardino President Leonard expresses the appreciation of the Club for your presence and invites you all to come again. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WATCH THE PARADEI It should not be necessary to advise you young fellows to watch "the Bathing Beauty". However, Rotary lias a float in that parade, which may, we hope, be a winner, thanks to Tex Blackman, "Straw Boss"; Les Elkins in whose build- ^ ing the float was constructed, and [Jack Young, whose men are decor-iating it. BUT ESPECIALLY TO KATEERINE, i the lovely daughter of Tex and 'Mrs. Blackman, who will be "Only A Rose" on the Rotary Club float, Sunday afternoon. NAM MEETING President Leonard has received notice that the Eleventh Regional Conference of the National Associa-tion of Manufacturers will meet at luncheon 12:00 noon, May 23, in the Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles. Claude A Putnam, 1950 President of the NAM, will deliver the address. Mr. Putnam is proving to he one of the recognized industrial states-men of our time. At this luncheon he will point out the way in helping stem the tide toward socialism in this country. All members of this Rotary Club who can possibly attend should do so. Applications for reservations should be made through President Leonard. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FISHIN' Allye, Scoop, Wayne and Mike went fishing last week-end, at Ensen-j ada, Mexico. They all tell the same ; story about having caught 1500 pounds of fiah, which is a fishy story. PERSONALS Where now is A1 Corradetti? Last we heard of him, he was in Switzerland. Doc Gatewood was a very ac-tive member of the Nevada Dental Association in session in Las Vegas early in the week. Doc sure has some pull! Isabelle Blackman (and Las Vegas Rotary Club) was honored by being made President of the Nevada Federation of Women's Clubs, a real mark of distinction. Isabelle will attend the meeting of the National Board of the Federation, of which she is a member, and will reflect credit on Nevada as well as Las Vegas Rotary Club. Scoop Garsidc, following the death of Clyde Terrill of Tonopah, becomes President of the Nevada State Press Association, a well de-served honor. Scoop has been ac-tive in the Press Association for several years. Jim Shaver attended Rotary meeting last week in Denver, Colo-rado, and reports a most interest-ing time. Jim declares that one of the finest things about membership in Rotary is the privilege of at-tending Rotary Club meetings in other cities.
