tines ouma Fountain of Youth? Who Needs It! By JUNE ANDERSON ALMQUIST Women?╟╓s News Editor, The Times Really, you?╟╓ve got to meet her to believe her. She is Mary Anderson * who turned 90 years old last Tuesday. ?╟úNinety??╟Ñ you?╟╓d ask if you saw her. ?╟úShe just can?╟╓t be,?╟Ñ you?╟╓d declare. Obviously somewhere along the way Mrs. Anderson took a mighty healthy drink from the Fountain of Youth. She?╟╓s a fine figure of a woman, with a beautiful face and with shapely legs young women would envy. Her posture is perfect. Her voice is strong. She moves quickly and her step is light. Her clothes are chic and colorful. Her smile is wondrous and ?╟÷ best of all ?╟÷ is always there. Even more youthful than the appearance, is the person of Mary Anderson. She?╟╓s full of life?╟÷of zip and go. She?╟╓s never idle, but likes to be doing. "I like to have fun is all,?╟Ñ is the way she puts it. Mrs. Anderson?╟╓s age is no surprise to her. And, heck, she expects to keep going just the way she is for a long time. . MRS. ANDERSON CELEBRATED her birthday at a party last Sunday. It was a ?╟úfirst?╟Ñ for her ?╟÷ the very first just-for-Mary birthday party she?╟╓d ever had. ?╟úThat doesn?╟╓t mean my birthdays haven?╟╓t been celebrated though,?╟Ñ she said. ?╟úBut because my date is so close to Thanksgiving, and often falls right on it, the family usually has celebrated then. And besides, I was married on my birthday, so until my husband, Charley, died, we celebrated our anniversary then, too.?╟Ñ The party was at the home of Mrs. Anderson?╟╓s son-inlaw and daughter, Mr. and Mrs* James F. Chorlton, with whom she makes her home. (Mrs. Chorlton, Irene Ffolliott, is her only daughter; a son, Frank, died several years ago.) c In the gathering were all her grandchildren: Mrs. Archie Le Coque (Ffolliott Marilyn Chorlton) of Las Vegas (a dancer and choreographer, she is manager of the show at the Desert Inn); Jim Chorlton, who is regional manager of domestic sales for The Boeing Co.?╟╓s commercial division, and K Chorlton, who used to play with the old Seattle Rainiers baseball team and now is in the wholesale furniture business, as is his father. (A note on that name K: The senior Chorlton also once was a baseball player, in the Montana Mines League. K is the ballplayers?╟╓ scoring symbol for a strikeout, and it?╟╓s from that that K got his name.) ALSO CHEERING the honoree were all her, great-grandchildren, Jim?╟╓s five youngsters and K?╟╓s four. It was a typical gathering of this family ?╟÷ lively. As Mrs. Anderson explained, ?╟úWe?╟╓re a family of fun.?╟Ñ When you note that Mrs. Anderson makes her home with her son-in-law and daughter, all generations of the family are quick to remark that this is not a case of ?╟úGrandma needing looking after.?╟Ñ From left, FFOLLIOTT LE COQUE, MARY ANDERSON, JIM CHORLTON and K CHORLTON They danced with Grandma on her. 90th birthday During the depression years, when things were tough for everybody, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson joined forces with the Chorltons in one house. Mrs. Chorlton stayed home to look after the children and keep house. All the other adults were out working. Mrs. Anderson, gifted with a needle, opened up a dressmaking and tailoring shop in the Roosevelt District in 1933. She did right well with it so that even after times got better, she kept right on going with it, not retiring until she was 74. . Dakota, where her father homesteaded and also was a builder. She and Charley Anderson, a pharmacist* were married in 1903 in Cooperstown, N. D. A yen for a marine climate brought them here ill 1928 and shortly after their children followed. She travels, too. Every summer she goes to North Dakota (Alone??╟Ñ We asked. ?╟úOf course,?╟Ñ she replied, ?╟úI don?╟╓t need anyone to look after me.?╟Ñ) to visit relatives, including two brothers, 87 and 85, and ?╟úmy baby sister, who is 80.?╟Ñ She also makes annual trips to Las Vegas. Also, when times got better the double-family gave Some thought to splitting up, but not much. ?╟úWe always had too much fun together, so we stayed that way,?╟Ñ the family will tell you. THE FORMER MARIT HANSON (Maiy is her nickname) was bom in Norway, coming to this country with her family when she was 6 years old. She grew up in North Although Mary Anderson quit sewing commercially when she was 74, she still keeps her sewing machine humming ?╟÷ making all her own clothes and many for her family. She also knits a lot, averaging at least a dozen sweaters a year. And she paints. Several handsome water-colors hung in the Chorlton home attest to her talent. And she?╟╓s active in her church, the 11th Church of Christ,v Scientist. ?╟úI haven?╟╓t missed seeing my granddaughter?╟╓s shows at the Desert Inn for six years.?╟Ñ She likes to play cards and she loves parties. This is probably one of the reasons she is a* night person. ?╟úI?╟╓m late to bed and late to rise.?╟Ñ Yes, you?╟╓ve got to meet Mary Anderson to believe her. And it?╟╓s a delightful experience.
