Shortly afterward, Ray Sinatra, the hotel bandleader, went to the microphone and said: ?╟╓?╟╓Danny Thomas will not appear tonight but we have found some friends in the audience who will take his place.?╟Ñ The '?╟ friends?╟Ñ as an astonished audience soon discovered, were Jimmy Durante, the Ritz Brothers, Denise Darcel, Frankie Laine, Spike Jones, Jane Powell, and Ray Anthony, all of whom went on stage and performed without charge for their old pal, Jack Entratter. Since then show people have not been surprised at anything involv- ing Jack and his desert stage. When he recently decided that Van Johnson had cabaret possiblities, for instance, the young movie star protested he couldn't do it. "Jack,?╟Ñ he said, "I haven't the right material and, believe it or not, X haven't got the money to buy it.?╟Ñ ?╟╓?╟╓Don't worry about it,?╟Ñ Jack replied. ?╟Ñ1 know a couple of writers in Hollywood who can write the material - and I'll give you a $10,000 advance on your salary to pay for it.?╟Ñ Johnson's subsequent performance was what the pros call ?╟Ñsocko,?╟Ñ and as a special tribute most of the hotel employees began wearing the Van Johnson trademark - bright red socks. Some of them are still on display in other Las Vegas spots. -more-
