This Clip LOS ANGELES, CALIF. HERALD-EXPRESS . ... Allfi 14 1958 Cobina Wright gf This Clipping From SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. EXAMINER HAROLD HILDEBRAND 'Le Lido de Paris' j Horror Pictures Setting I Box Office Records ills Las Vegas LAS VEGAS NOTEBOOK. |. Lunched on Sunday with Katie Malone (wifd of Sen. George Ma- j lone) , her daughter Mollie O?╟╓Connor, and several others in Charles Baron?╟╓s attractive apartment at I Tropicana Hotel. Katie brought her grandchildren, David and adorable j little Cindy for a short visit. Being a grandmother my- f self, I can readily understand Katie?╟╓s I pride in these youngsters. We dined that evening at the new g Stardust Hotel and saw ?╟úLe Lido de | Paris?╟Ñ which I think is one of the most g artistic and beautiful shows ever pre- p sented in Las Vegas. The Bruno Paglais s (Merle Oberon) had told me not to miss p this extravaganza, as it was the best | show of its kind they had ever seen. It | is the first night club show ever brought | 1 'i intact from Europe to America, and it is 1 own. wnehl indeed ?╟úC?╟╓est Magnifique.?╟Ñ Conceivefrby I Pierre. Louis-Guerin and Rene Fraday, staged by 4?den, it is under the personal supervision of that ^re at gjjowman, Prank Sennes, of the Moulin Rouge. ^fwo hundred and ten thousand dollars was spent for the wardrobe and the huge stage was built espe- ; cially for the presentation of this magnificent spectacle j ?╟÷a real Continental touch in Las Vegas. The floor of j the stage opens to reveal a swimming pool and an ice rink is raised to stage level for lovely Jacqueline Du Bief?╟╓s sensational figure skating act. The beautiful show girls and dancers were imported from Holland, Germany, Prance, Italy, England and the Scandinavian countries. Attractive singer Dorothea MacFarland, who appeared in the London production of ?╟úKiss Me Kate?╟Ñ is the only American girl in the show. The music under the direction of John Augustine is delightful. The juggling and magic acts are unusual. Especially good is Marvyn Roy with his ?╟úIllusions Elec* triques,?╟Ñ a new and different magic act. The grand finale with the fireworks display, the clever stage set and the beautiful girls is a perfect curtain for ?╟úLe Lido de Paris?╟Ñ which is magnificent. Later, in the Stardust Lounge?╟÷just before dashing to the airport?╟÷I had a few minutes to hear singer Diane Payne and see two of the stunning gowns designed for her by Don Loper and Edith Head. Chatted with Mrs. Edward Barrett of Chicago (Diane?╟╓s sister) who told me that her husband, former secretary of state is now county clerk. IN THE MAIL ... Received a card from Prey Brown ttho is traveling in Russia with Gaylord Hauser?╟÷a reproduction of a photo of one of the newer buildings in Moscow. It looks like the Wrigley Building in Chicago. Frey writes that Moscow has been a very stimulating experience for them. They saw the Czar?╟╓s reception rooms in the Kremlin Palace which are not open to most tourists and met Adlai Stevenson at a cocktail party given in the American Embassy ... In a letter from Europe, Richard Gully wrote that he had sat next to Nancy Spain, well known London columnist at the presentation of Balmain?╟╓s new fall collection in Paris, before he left for Stockholm to joini Jaynie and Tex Feldman and helo celebrate her birthday. Richard is very happy in his public relations work. One of his clients is handsome 41-year-old Francisco Pignatari, a fabulous man of great charm. Although of Italian parentage, he grew un in Brazil and is a citizen of that country. He and his sister, Countess Sofio of Florence, own the tremendous Pignatari industrial empire in Brazil. HERMAN COHEN He startei popularity. A demanding public with its varying tastes in motion picture entertainment is keeping Hollywood on its producing toes. Two years ago Producer Herman Cohen?╟╓s ?╟úI Was a Teenage Werewolf?╟Ñ started a trend of horror pictures that has been setting box office records. Threatening to dislodge the horror film in popularity is the solid old-fashioned family fare evidenced in Allied Artists?╟╓ ?╟úThe Littlest Hobo,?╟Ñ which took in a healthy $85,000 in the first week of a multiple-run booking here. MGM?╟╓s entry in family film entertainment is ?╟úAndy Hardy Comes Home,?╟Ñ one of the culver City studio?╟╓s all time high grossing series updated and starring the irrespres-sible Mickey Rooney. Both films are expected to rival Cohen?╟╓s record $2,000,000 first year gross. Cohen, with a two-year head start, has four horror films in release?╟÷?╟úWerewolf,?╟Ñ ?╟úI Was a Teenage Frankenstein,?╟Ñ ?╟úBlood of Dracula?╟Ñ and ?╟úHow to Make a Monster?╟Ñ?╟÷and is _ currently in London film-ping his fifth, ?╟úHorrors of, the Black Museum.?╟Ñ Allied Artists president > Steve Broidy claims there; is: still a ?╟útremendous fam- , ily audience even in the biggest city,?╟Ñ citing the; success of ?╟úThe Littlest;. Hobo?╟Ñ opening grosses. j At any rate, it will he | interesting to see how the; 1 ?╟úAndy Hardy?╟Ñ film does fcv l its opening this week at a ( dozen local houses, includ* | I hig the downtown State, Wiltern . and Vogue. This co-authored by Edward Hut- , 008 shing of The Examiner?╟╓s copy desk. Dick Powell recently told us that ?╟úa picture nowadays has to have an International flavor as far as the cast is concerned. This makes it more saleable on the world market.?╟Ñ So you can look forward to seeing at least one foreign star in his productions. In ?╟úEnemy Below?╟Ñ it was Curt Jurgens and in ?╟úThe Hunters,?╟Ñ ( currentl screening at thePa Angeles, a n dnumerous neighborhood it?╟╓s May Britt. And he?╟╓s eyeing Alec Guinness (?╟úIdeally speaking?╟Ñ) for a forthcoming comedy. In person Powell is. genuine, witty and erudite. Ke is conversant not only on any phase of the entertainment scene but on scores of other topics. He has a knack as raconteur and a flair for emceeing and ad libbing. A teenager seeking -his autograph is certain to get a cheery hello and always a ?╟úthank you.?╟Ñ The producer-director has numerous interesting anecdotes about his cruise to Alaska this summer and may tell you some of them in his fourth annual guest column for us later this month. the Biltmore?╟╓s r?╟Ñ sold out POTPOURRI: Anna Maria Alberghetti will headline at the Moulin Rouge when the theater-restaurant opens its new Donn Arden revue next montli'1"n this nitery is seeking Louis Prima and Keely Smith for the Christ mas holidays. ?╟úDead Pigeon?╟Ñ opens tomorrow night at the Gallery for a limited run of five to six weeks .. will be followed by ?╟úThe Diary of Anne Frank.?╟Ñ Jerry Lewis?╟╓ week at the Greek Theater netted $83,-
