The Institute for Security Studies was a research institute based out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that was in operation from 2003 to 2011. The institute was founded with the support of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and the aim was to become a leading think tank on homeland security. The institute focused on developing and managing counter terrorism programs for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center, and the resort industry. The institute received most of their funding through federal grants from the Department of Homeland Security. In 2011 the Institute for Security Studies shut down due to a lack of revenue.
