Biographical / Historical Note

The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) was established on April 1, 1980 as an extension of the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) ROTC program. At this time the staff of the UNLV ROTC consisted of one officer, one non-commissioned officer, and a part-time secretary. Eighty cadets were enrolled in the fall semester of 1980 and sixty-eight cadets enrolled in the spring semester of 1981. On May 5, 1981 the Consolidated Students of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (CSUN) adopted a resolution to permanently add the ROTC to UNLV. In fall of 1983 the ROTC was accepted as fully functioning department within the College of Education. By the late 1980s the ROTC program experienced a drop in enrollment and initiated a recruitment campaign. In 1990 many personnel and officers left. On May 2, 1991 the UNLV Army ROTC held its closing ceremony. The final closure actions were completed in September 1991.

In 1998, with the help of Senator Harry Reid, the UNLV ROTC program was reinstated. As of January 2020, UNLV has both an Army ROTC program as well as an Air Force ROTC program. The Air Force ROTC program began in the 2015 academic year.
