Biographical / Historical Note

The Department of Health and Physical Education was formed in 1998 under the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's (UNLV) College of Education. The department stemmed from the Physical Education program that was created as part of the College of Education in 1954. It was subsequently transitioned through various iterations as the Department of Physical Education (1955), the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (1981), the Department of Kinesiology (1988), and the College of Human Performance and Development (1991). In 2001, physical education faculty were moved to the Department of Educational Leadership, and in 2004, the creation of Department of Sports Education Leadership again shifted the nature of health and physical education at UNLV until it was discontinued in 2012. The department no longer exists today, but the content is spread throughout departments in the School of Allied Health Sciences.
