Biographical / Historical Note

In 1951, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) started out as a year-to-year extension program for the University of Nevada, Reno in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1954, the Nevada Board of Regents established the program as a southern branch of the University of Nevada; the campus was called the University of Nevada, Southern Regional Division, and was commonly referred to as Nevada Southern University (NSU). After pressure from Las Vegas residents, the Board of Regents purchased land for a campus along Maryland Parkway. Classes for the university were previously held in the auditorium dressing rooms of Las Vegas High School. The first classes were held in 1957 and the first commencement ceremony took place in 1964. In 1969, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas adopted its current name. The university celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1982, its 40th anniversary in 1997, and its 50th anniversary in 2007.
