THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER
Francis Scott Key
Oh! say, can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, and bombs bursting in airB
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there!M
Oh! sayDdoes the star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
TRADITIONS OF THE PROCESSIONAL
ACADEMIC DRESS. The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. It appears that academic clothing was first introduced and worn at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England in the thirteenth century.
The European custom was carried to America with: the establishment of our own colleges and universities. In 1895 an academic code of dress was adopted and the standards accepted by most of the colleges and universities in the United States. Today, the black robeW hood and cap are generally worn.
Three different types of black gowns may be distinguished in the academic procession. The bachelors gowns have long pointed sleeves; the masters gowns have oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in the front. The doctors gowns are faced with velvet and have bell-shaped sleeves with three bars of velvet.
The Oxford cap, th ^so-called mortarboard, is black and has a long tassel fastened to the Diddle of the top that.is worn pendanfcover the left front of the cap. The hood, draped from the shoulder®, denotes by its length and colorsBthe degree and the institution which conferred the degree.
THE MACE. The mace bornyl oft bv^dav’s Grand Marshal at We Kent of the processionaBcarries with 'iTSMistv«Wthat Wretches back to medieval times. Originally a weapon of offense, the earliest maces were made of iron and were capable of breaking Mmor. Bishops, forbidden by canon ica Daw to bear swords, took Me ftace withrfhem into battle for protection. The mace continued in use a®j|a weapon until the late 16th century.
The mace's use as an instrument of ceremony, however, began about the year 1250 in England and France. EnMHed witfecostly Metals, the mace was born by the King’s Sergeant and Arms as a symbol gF® authority. Affixed tol|tsP'coronet were the country’s royal arms.
Today, the mace is used widely in university commencement programs and has been adopted by cathedrals and parish churches W ceremonies led by ecclesiastical dignitaries and clergy.
